I believe that MSDN and TechNet subscribers can get Office 2010 starting tomorrow, April 22, 2010.

I am not a fan of the Ribbon. I resisted Office 2007 as long as possible but since I have to support others who use it I migrated to it forsaking Office 2003.

For the same reason I have been testing Office 2010 for the last several months. It is not substantially different than Office 2007 but the many minor tweaks make for an improved user experience. If you have a choice between Office 2007 and 2010 I recommend 2010.

Woody said, “a possibly worthwhile upgrade for Office 2003. If you can get used to the %$#@! ribbon.”

We really need a word that lets us know when an “up”grade is unworthy of that label. What do we say when we want to convey that “this piece of rubbish being marketed as an upgrade, but which is actually a big step in the wrong direction”. Just like tacking “-gate” onto the end of a word instantly lets us know that a political intrigue and fiasco are involved, we need a word that lets us know that the most recent version of a software lineage is a pile of pigeonpoop worth noting only as we avoid stepping in it.

      • UpSETgrade, perhaps?
      • Turkeygrade?
      • Oopsgrade?
      • Urp-grade?
      • Failinggrade?
      • SCHTUp-grade?
      • Bloatedandstinkinginthehotsun-ware?
      • Softinthehead-ware? Scoffedware?
      • Brokensteponthestaircase-grade?

We’ve needed this bit of jargon for years: we could instantly apply it to describing Vista-after-XP, AVG versions after July 2008, Centerpoint Software version 7, all Norton software after Symantec bought out Peter “pinkshirt” Norton, all DOS after 3.3, and anything containing The Accursed Microsoft Ribbon Of Doom ™.

I look forward to seeing you folks coining the right label for this phenomenon.
