Office 2003 and limited user accounts

I have an XP (SP3) machine with one Computer Administrator account and three limited user accounts.

The limited user accounts are experiencing trouble with opening Office 2003 applications. Each application will open, but each time it asks for the user name details (as it should on first opening after install) but that information does not ‘stick’ and the user is asked for it each time. And there are two of these dialogue boxes each time. So the user accepts the first box (with the application splash screen in the background) and then is faced with the same dialogue box again (with the normal template in the background each time).

When they close Word, they are asked if they want to save their chages to the global normal template (whether they have made changes or not). The only answer here is No, because as limited users, they do not have the permissions to change this.

Is this a corruption in each of the three limited accounts, or a problem in Office? And what do I do about it?

I guess this got lost in amongst the chageover. I’d still like to know an answer if anyone has time to think about it with me.

Did you install the software using an admin account?

I think the user information is saved in the registry. Is it possible that the limited user accounts cannot update the relevant portion of the registry? If so, that is going to make it difficult to customize Word. (Microsoft may well have a solution for that, but I’ve never had to research it.)

Yes, I am sure that the software was installed using the admin account.

How can I see the permissions in the registry? What do I need to change?

Using regedit, at any level you can right click a key and select properties. You should see the standard security tab available.
