I’ve read a lot lately (including inWOW) that the best version of Office is 2k with sr1a. I have 2k and it works fine. I use all the programmes fairly frequently – particularly Access and Word and have had no problems with it at all. I’m not inclined to fix it when it is not broken but is there any real advantage to sr1a? Should I go for it and if so can any one tell me why?
    Thanks.

It is really depends of how do you use Office — SR1 is a collection of minor fixes and security patches. For details, see List of Fixed Problems in Microsoft Office 2000 Service Release 1/1a

If you use Access heavily and especially if you change the design and otherwise modify the database structures, definitely apply SR1a. There are a couple of bugs in the vanilla 2k version that will drive you nuts otherwise, and there isn’t really any way to program around them. One of these is the fact that when you append a value to an autonumber field, it doesn’t reset the next value of the autonumber. Instead, you wind up trying to add new records to a table and getting duplicate key or index errors until you finally manage to reach the end of the appended values.

        Charlotte,

I know I should ask this in Access, but as you’ve brought it up here…..

With Access 9.0.4402 SR1, when I rename a query I have to rebuild any dependant queries as the name isn’t changed in them. I have all 3 name autocorrect options turned on. Would this be solved by upgrading to sr1a? Or should I shuffle off to Access and delve deeper into the problem there?

If you’re using Name Autocorrect in Access2K you should definitely apply SR1a.
Name Autocorrect does several wierd things which SR1a fixes.

            Thanks,

            Now, a few more questions……

          • #566162

Even in SR1 I don’t trust it, and it sucks up resources and causes database bloat. If I find I absolutely *must* rename a query down the road, I use SpeedFerret (http://www.speedferret.com) or Rick Fisher’s Find and Replace (http://www.rickworld.com). I don’t usually rename queries down the road, because the names are only meaningful to a developer, and they can figure it out. grin As you might expect, my users never see the names of the queries, so cosmetic issues don’t apply. nope

Thanks for the advice. I took it and everything’s still working fine.
This thread seems to have wandered off on its own since my original request but thanks any way.
