OE does not remember password (OE 6.0)

A friend just got a new HP computer with WIN XP. When he opens Outlook Express – it asks for his password and the “remember password” is grayed out. He inputs his password and can send and receive email normally. When he closes and reopens Outlook Express, it again asks for his password. I have gone to his Email Account and typed in his password and checked the REMEMBER password. However, when I check the ACCOUNT again, the password is not there. Please help.
