I’ve just finished my first setup ever of a Windows 10 computer. It’s a “new” refurbished Dell Precision 5530 running Win 10 pro x64 21H2. Purchased through a reputable vendor that shipped the machine current through the August 2022 updates.

Setup went well (ignoring my irritation at the vague, obtuse, and sometimes frankly misleading verbiage to get me signed up in a Microsoft Account) and at the end I updated the Defender definitions and did a quick scan which took all of 20 seconds and reported scanning somewhere between 40 and 50 thousand files with no issues found.

Then I ran a full scan. About 10 seconds into the scan it showed about 300,000 to 400,000 files scanned. About 8 minutes later it showed about 1,200,000 files scanned and predicted about another 6 to 7 minutes remaining before scan completion. Then suddenly it reported being finished with a total elapsed time of about 8 and a half minutes and about 400,000 files scanned.

I’m not concerned about the incorrect predicted remaining scan time, but the number of files scanned seems pretty strange. Why would it report 1,200,000 scanned files while the scan was executing and then only 400,000 files scanned after the scan finished?

I used the word “about” above because while I was paying attention, I wasn’t totally concentrating on it, my main reason for running the scan being to get a feel for the computer’s speed.

One other thing. Where can I download wushowhide? I can find a lot of links to info about it but can’t seem to find a download link/site.

There is a link to it in AKB2000016 in Section 1.

Thanks everyone for the links, congratulations, and sympathy.

I had hoped to never deal with Windows again, but that’s not in the cards, apparently. W10 doesn’t seem that bad, but it does seem that a lot of it is change for change sake and much of it seems overly complicated.

I’ve been reading through the AKB topics and they have been very helpful. Sorry I missed the wushowhide link there – perhaps my eyes were bleeding too much by then.

FYI the larger number, 1,200,000 files, represents the number of files read by Defender, and the smaller number, three to four hundred thousand files, represents the number of files actually scanned for viruses and malware by Windows Defender. Defender may not actually scan every file read if it detects that doing so is not actually necessary, due to it being a known and identifiable Windows or Microsoft file having the correct file name, attribute, size, and other identifying characteristics.

Many files are actually archives in disguise (ex. Microsoft Office Word documents) Windows Defender does open these and if able does scan all the files inside.
