Odd mouse pad problem.

This is on an HP 355 G2 laptop, running Win7 Prof 64-bit. When sliding my finger on the pad, the function will randomly change from moving the mouse cursor, to zooming. Then, depending on the app, I have to go find how to reset the view to “normal”. Very annoying. I didn’t even know the mouse pad HAD this function. For what its worth, I have the mouse pad “tap” function turned off, as both my wife and I have a mild “shaky” hand syndrome. (So we don’t actually “tap” at the wrong time.)

Anyone have any idea why this might arbitrarily switch to the “zoom” function? Thanks all.

Funny how the simple act of asking a question kicks your brain into high gear. I delved a little deeper into the mouse control panel and found a “buried” option for “pinch” zooming. I unchecked it. I have a funny feeling that I just solved my problem.

One very simple solution to an errant mouse pad, (also called a Touch Pad), is either a corded USB mouse or a WiFi Mouse.

The WiFi mouses are handy when they are working properly, but they do have their own basket of problems, batteries being the #1 problem.

I have five laptops, and on the ones where the Touch Pad can be shut OFF, it IS! and on the rest, I just try real hard to never touch it. I can play games or install programs so much faster with a real MOUSE, than with a Touch Pad, it’s not even funny.

Hi Doc. Whenever I use my laptop on a desk or table, the USB mouse is exactly what I do. But occasionally, I use it in my easy chair or in bed. Then the mouse pad is necessary. However, unchecking the “pinch zoom” option fixed it.

One of the worse things the PC industry ever did, was name a portable PC as a “Laptop”. Because having one sitting on one’s lap or bed is just inviting a CPU or GPU meltdown! The cooling air intakes on most laptops are on the bottom, and when the little PC is sitting on a lap or bed, etc., that air intake is covered. Don’t do it!

I caution all of my customers to always use their laptops ONLY on a smooth, clean, surface.

I was recently given a beautiful BIG HP Laptop that would shut down within one minute of powering up.
The cooling fins were packed solid with dirt and the cooling fan was locked up tight. When I told my customer what it would cost to repair it, he just gave it to me and said he’d just buy a new one. Typical!

For ‘shaky hands’, something I ran across a couple of days ago is Camera Mouse, which is a free tool that allows users to control their mouse pointer with head movements. This sort of technology is getting better all the time, so it’s useful to keep track of it, given that it is something that any of us may need at some time.
