I do not use IE in day to day use. IE7 was installed in mid January, and I have not browsed further than the default start page grin. During the first 3-4 years with XP I did use IE, then moved to Fx and for some time kept both bookmarks and favorites synced. But since my last OS install I have not touched the default few favorites, some were added when I upgraded to IE7. (Then it’s another story that last time I tried to import bookmarks to IE, before last rebuild, IE made a mess of my fine structure worked out in Fx.)

However, some month ago I found a new icon among IE favorites. If I translate from Swedish, it says Search result – computers. Odd. It is, obviously, placed in my profile; C:Document and SettingsusernameFavoriter. However, if I hover over the icon a tooltip says: Place: Desktop, and in folder view WinExplorer it is shown also.

I did a quick search for files created or changed at the date the new favorite was created. I did not find any other interesting files changed/created around that date and time, that I could link to this. The new favorite is 2 months younger than my upgrade to IE7.

From the Win9x era I remember a special search setting; search computers, but this, I don’t know.

It could be it is a result of me being tired and accidently drag something to the Favorites, but don’t know.

If I click on the Favorite from Windows Explorer, the right “pane” changes to “a search result with no result”, it says Follow instructions at left to start the search. If in folder view it also jumps to the system folder at the end of the tree, i.e. last icon on Desktop, next to folders on Desktop. If in Task pane view, it just says Search result – Computers System folder, in the left task pane.

Has anyone seen this? Just curious.

I have never seen this. But what happens if you rename it ??? Does it recreate a new one on reboot ??? Nothing ???

Thanks for reply. Well, it is placed in my profiles Favorites, so I can always delete it (and everything else in there if I like). Also, since it is a shortcut I can rename it, just tested to check, and it is not changed back after a reboot.

What I failed to tell in my post was that the search result folder, in the left folder view, is only there after I clicked the Favorite, obviously I did a test click to find what happened then reported what I saw, however I did not tell it isn’t there before.

So it is just like when a search is done; the search result is shown to the right, and if you shift to Folder view the search result folder is shown in the tree view at left. Such as click Search on Start menu > change to Folder view in Toolbar. That is how it look if I click this Favorite in Windows Explorer.

Guess I was tired one night, and accidently drag something to the Favorites (God knows how, since I don’t use the Favorites).

          Ever install Google Desktop ???

            Nope.

I think I am going to delete the shortcut/Favorite anyway, since it is useless. When I click on it I get a “search result” showing nothing, and depending on interface, My Computer with Task Pane or Windows Explorer with Folder View, I get a task pane just telling me Search Result is a System folder, or in Folder View showing me the search result folder in the tree.

(I normally don’t use the Search companion (Windows Search), only when searching files between different dates; usually I use the Command Prompt.)

            However, just tried the following:
            – In Windows Explorer, Folder View, I clicked the Favorite mentioned.
            – Then clicked Search on the toolbar
            – Up came a search pane for Computers (remember the name for the Favorite was Search result – Computers). See screen shot.

It says “Which computer do you want to search for? Computer name:

Odd. To reach this one, depending on how one have tweaked the Search companion, one have to start Search, click Change preferences, click Computers or Persons, select A computer on the network.

As I said, I was most a little curious, and thought maybe the Loungers that are into IE might know.
