I have Windows 7 Pro, and use W7ESUI.  I also use Windows Update to install the latest Malicious Software Removal Tool (MSRT) every month.

A couple hours ago, I noticed the Windows Update tray icon had appeared in the system tray.  I checked, and MSRT version 5.104 was listed as ready for install.  The version number made sense, since the last one I installed (on July 26 after Susan went to Defcon 4) was version 5.103.  But the timing was strange, since in the past the MSRT has always appeared on (or within a day of) Patch Tuesday, which isn’t until August 9 this month.

So I decided  to do a “Check for Updates,” and sure enough after doing so, I no longer was being offered a new MSRT.   Instead I got the “Up to Date” green shield.

This all seems kind of bizarre.  Any idea what might be going on here?

Let me ask a more specific question;  Is it possible that this little oddity could be a result of some sort of malware?  Doesn’t seem likely to me, but I was hoping someone else would opine.  Thanks.

I don’t have W7, but I wouldn’t expect this to be malware – no point in trying to mimic WU when you can do things quietly in the background.

      cheers, Paul
