I have an Acer Aspire R3610 nettop running Win7 64bit, connected to a Panasonic LCD TV by HDMI cable. Up to last month all was well. When I returned from a trip it downloaded and installed a string of Windows updates, each time creating a Restore Point. This swamped the free disk space and most Restore points were discarded.

Now when I switch on, it boots into the Win desktop and I hear the Start Up sound. After that no sound at all.

Device Manager shows nVidia and Realtek HD audio devices working. The Sound applet shows both with nVidia set as default.

I have tried uninstalling the nVidia driver and re-installing the driver download from the Acer web site. No luck.

I have gone through the TV set up routine. Tried another HDMI lead and checked the original with other kit. No joy.

I can’t see anyone else with this problem in the Lounge and a search on line got me nowhere so far.

Go to Control Panel > Sound > Playback tab. Try enabling each listed device in turn and test for sound.
If that doesn’t help, try booting to safe mode and see if you get sound. If you get sound in safe mode, try the Windows 7 clean bootdiagnostic procedure (ignore the fixit that pop’s up).

      Thanks, Jerry,

I already drew a blank with Control panel Sound. I didn’t try Safe Mode but it’s bed time here. I’ll give it a go after work tomorrow.

Interesting development; some how, I don’t know how, I have enabled sound for Firefox but not the system sounds. When I go to the catch-up TV page I get the full 1080p picture and sound but none of the beeps, burps and jingles, which Windows uses.

Frankly, that’s a result I can live with. I’ve wasted enough time on this. There must be some obscure setting but who knows.

Thanks again to Jerry for the suggestions. I just wish I could tell you how I did it.
