• NVIDIA doesn't finish finishing

My video card is NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS and I am running Vista Ultimate sp1. Some time ago I updated the driver via “Update driver” in the video card properties window. The installation seemed to go ok, and I had no display problems, except that whenever I logged onto an account, I would get a UAC window asking to finish the installation of the driver. If I clicked ok to proceed, it would finish installation and tell me that the installation was successful. If I clicked “Remind me later” of course the box just went away, but the driver version number was still the same. Well, this was annoying to have to do with every log on, so I rolled back to old driver. Result: I still had to finish installation — this time of the old driver — with every logon. Next step: download the latest driver from NVIDIA (version 7.15.11.8250, dated 3/27/2009). Again the installation seemed to be successful, but I still have the same problem with a UAC window asking me to finish installation with every logon. I checked the NVIDIA support site but can’t find any mention of this problem. Any ideas? As I say, I am having no display problems, just the annoyance of having to jump through this same hoop so often, for no apparent reason.

Another reason for disabling UAC! I know there are some who will jump on me for saying that but one of the first things I did after installing Vista about a year ago, was to get rid of UAC.
If you want, you could temporarily disable it and try to install the drivers, then re-enable it, if it makes you feel more comfortable.

It’s not a UAC problem, it’s a driver installation problem. If I disable UAC, the driver still has to finish installing itself every time I log on (I get the notification windows just above the tray area). It just doesn’t ask my permission to do it. My question is how to get the driver installation to finish finishing, so that it it knows it is completely installed.

I checked the NVIDIA support site but can’t find any mention of this problem.

BUT, did you ask about your problem at the “NVIDIA support site”?

Can you provide a link to this NVIDIA support site?

I didn’t, but I will now. I’ve always had better luck in the Lounge than on these company support sites, but I’ll give it a try later. At the moment, the site seems to be having problems, because I get a server error code when I click “Get help” on this page:

but I still have the same problem with a UAC window asking me to finish installation with every logon.

If UAC is disabled, why would it nag you to finish?

If you search Google for this problem, you’ll find that other users have it too. If UAC is turned off, they still get the message that the installation has to finish, they just don’t get the prompt for permission…

Yes, exactly. That’s what is happening. As I said, it’s not a UAC problem but a driver installation issue. It still has to finish installing with every logon, UAC or no UAC. My searches aren’t finding any solutions to this issue, so I guess I’ll just have to live with it.

There are a lot of irate people in this thread http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t76768.html and a possible solution near the bottom.

Also this thread here, while not nvidia related suggests that driver updates should be undertaken as administrator (and mentions a hidden administrator account…)

The first thread mentions Driver sweeper which can be found here.

Disclaimer: I have neither tried these solutions or installed the software. Also I am running Windows XP and 2000, so my Vista knowledge is negligible. So, as always, undertake at your own risk

Wow, there are a lot of angry people on that thread. Thanks for pointing me to this. A number of solutions seem possible, and I am going to take the time to try to sort them out before taking action. Thanks to everyone who has responded.
