Numbering heads in Word 2010

I have installed Office 2010 with word 2010.

I cannot get the heading 2 to show 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4 etc.
It shows only 1.1, 1.2 etc. and for heading 2 it shows 1.1, 1.2 etc. It should have been 2.1, 2.2 etc.

My old documents work OK, but not if I try to change the styles/heading’s numbering.

Cannot find any setting that could solve this problem. Can anyone help?

Hi,

Marvelous: I found the answer myself!!

One have to open “Change Styles” under “Home”; the select “Style Sets” and choose “Chapter setup”.

I could not find any Help in Word or Office for this type of setting for Style and Headings. Realy bad, don’t you think?

I’m glad you found a solution (though the Chapter Seutp style set is nota default style set in Word 2010). For instructions for simple multilevel llists, see this article from MS.

Thanks Pam, very usefull.

I have had a look into the articles and find them very usefull. Though this link did not work: the Word newsgroups (especially the Microsoft Word Numbering newsgroup) and from the MS Word MVP FAQ site. The contributions of John McGhie (especially his article about Word’s Numbering Explained on the MS Word MVP FAQ site) and Dave Rado are significant.

I still have a problem with Headings or Styles; when I close the document and Word and the start Word again and open the document, the Change Styles/Chapter Setup is not checked. The problem turns up when I try to make a new document, then the numbering does not follow the Heading 1 (e.g. chapter 2) it follows only chapter 1; 1.1, 1.2 etc. even though it is under chapter 2.

To make it follow I have to check the Chapter Setup under Change Styles.
The styles and headings I made yesterday works OK, but adding a new Heading 5 it did not work unless I have checked the Chapter Setup under Change Styles.
It looks to me that the Chapter Setup under Change Styles must be set for each new word section and not beeing standard when making new headings.
Also if I check the Chapter Setup under Change Style the headings from yesterday changed. I am quite sure that it should not be like this. But it must be some settings I have missed out. (I have not worked with Word 2010 for a long time, only Word 97).

Are there any article telling about how to set standard settings in Word?

When you find that style settings have changed when you reopen a document, the change is often due to the setting to update document styles from template. To check for this, go to Developer tab > Templates group > Document Template. If you see a check in the box before Automatically update document styles, clear the box. If you don’t see the Developer tab on the ribbon , go to File > Customize ribbon and on the right dialog pane, click the box before Developer.

The numbers are going wrong in your new documents most likely because there’s a mistake in the template’s multilevel list scheme. The easier fix is to follow the MS instructions (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo…010282072.aspx). To insert word “Chapter” ahead of the number in level 1: With the cursor in the first heading 1 in the doc, click Multilevel list icon > Define new Multilevel list > Level number (level 1 should already be selected). At the beginning of the Enter formatting for number box, type “Chapter “. OK out to the document. If this solves the problem in your document, fix the template too.

From your description. I’d say that the style set function is working correctly. A style set is a group of paragraph and character styles and their formatting. When you apply a style set, it overwrites the settings of same-named styles in the document. As you have found, it is not the best way to apply numbering in your document.

I will go through your advise in a quiet time.
The site you sent me to, http://www.shaunakelly.com/word, is a place where the descriptions of “how to do it” is very good; easy to understand. I will use this many times. The Word 2010 has a reconfigured menu and is difficult to guess where to find what compared to Word97
