A friend just got a new DELL and is getting an error msg – something about Window Root System 32 – can not find NTOSKRNL.EXE. He has had his Norton NAV activated so it “should” not be a virus. His system will not boot up – gives him the error msg and hangs.

Well, it’s not a virus. Tell your friend to get out the recovery CD and run a repair on the operating system. The file that is “missing” is the kernel, and without it nothing will happen.

As it turns out, his system seems to be fine now. If it happens again, how do we do the repair. I know he has a DELL recovery disk – will it bring up the “repair” option automatically?

Frankly, I don’t know if the recovery CD from Dell will do it or not. If it’s the Windows XP installation CD with some extra fluff, it *should – key word being should. OEMs such as Dell have gotten into the habit of sending out CDs that will not install the operating system, but instead will restore the machine to the same state it was in when it left the factory. That’s a risk that I personally don’t want to take because you could wipe out all of the data on the drive by using it.

Find out whether it is an actual copy of Windows XP or not – if so, you can boot with it and run the emergency repair from there. If it’s a restore CD, you may want to consider using it anyway, since the OS ius inaccessible at this point.

MS just release a download for a boot disk and CD setup set for XP Pro & Home.
