I have a Windows 2003 server running NT Backup for both itself and another server. Recently I have been getting the following error:

… is not a valid drive, or you do not have access

after the first networked directory is backed up.

I cannot find any answers via Google (except one in Spanish that I have not been able to translate successfully).

    Any ideas?

Have you checked permissions on all the folders being backed up? Any new folders created recently? Any new softwaqre installed?

        Hi Joe,

Its a backup that has been running well for a number of years. I have recently changed to new tapes, but some new tapes were OK and others get this message.

I found a reference to this error with another backup product and Travan tapes, but my tapes are not those, and I am not using that backup product.

The error does coincide with November’s MS updates so I might investigate down that track.

Do you run a tape cleaner regularly? Is the failure always with the same tapes?

            Hi Joe,

Yes, clean regularly, when the tape drive indicates. And no, not same tapes.

We used to clean only when the drive indicated it but had those errors start to popup (may have been on an older Travan drive also). So, we started cleaning on a regular schedule regardless.
