AskWoody LoungerFebruary 2, 2003 at 8:20 am #649843I don’t think this is the thyme or the plaice for such frivolity- as the sage says. Such discussions are not mint for this forum. People have been cummin here for a long time, without people getting curried away. Even I feel like a dill, getting into this pickle. When I could be out earning a celery.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 2, 2003 at 9:14 am #649847In keeping with the theme, I’m reminded of the musical works of PDQ Bach, and in particular, the oratorio, “The Seasonings”. (Although other music, such as “pervertimento for bagpipe, bicycle and balloons” comes to mind).
I’ve enjoyed PDQ Bach for many years, but have very rarely heard mention.
Is anyone else familiar with it?

I haven’t heard “The Seasonings”, but I’m quite familiar with PDQ Bach. I’ve even seen his “discoverer” in concert, Professor Peter Schickele. One of my favorites (er… favourites) is the 1712 Overture. Oddly enough, the more one has studied the “real” music, the more one can appreciate this incredibly witty parody.
One of the more memorable items from the concert was a Concerto for Airhorn. (If you’re not sure what an airhorn is, check out this page. It’s the kind that’s typically used at American Football games to “encourage” one’s team. They’re QUITE loud!) Where they would normally place a soloist, in front of the orchestra, the brought out a nice leather recliner, a small TV stand, and a TV that was turned on and showing a football game. What’s even better is that a large guy all dressed up (complete with face paint) to support his team was the featured Airhorn soloist. You can only imagine the rest… It was very entertaining.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 3, 2003 at 8:35 pm #650126Actually, I love Hansel and Gretel and Ted and Alice – an opera in one unnatural act. There’s a chant in there which is quite hilarious. I got into so much trouble once when I was in college because I went to a PDQ Bach performance instead of to my music history teacher’s lecture/recital. It was worth it, though.
I have had the opportunity several times to perform his set of Ground Rounds (catalog number $1.39 a pound). Very funny.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 13, 2003 at 10:26 am #653155There’s a RealAudio interview with PDQ Bach’s “discoverer” at http://www.wnyc.org/shows/soundcheck/archi…ml?month=200301 – check out the link The Many Faces of Peter Schickele
I did go to a live concert at the Sydney Opera House many years ago (a benefit concert)- it was a superb occasion.
