Not displaying images

Outlook on my laptop (Win 7 Office 2010) is not displaying images.

I’ve unchecked “Don’t download pictures automatically…” in Trust Center settings and now there is no right click option to download images but they still don’t display.

Just must a message to say
“the linked image cannot be displayed. The file may have been moved, renamed or deleted. Verify that the link points to the correct file and location”

but no indication of where the file should be.

What’s going on? I didn’t have this problem with my desktop PC (RIP).

Is it possible that your security software is blocking the images? Perhaps it is an overly aggressive privacy setting (web beacons, etc.). Or a firewall rule against some component of Outlook, or MS Word, browsing the web.

It is entirely possible and indeed most probable,

This notebook is using MS security essentials whereas my PC was using ZoneAlarm.

I was just browsing the forum here, looking for threads that seemed similiar to what I’m seeing. Although I think that kentg was referring to Outlook 2010, I have noticed , starting this past Tuesday, which was MS Patch Day for the month of November, that my copy of Outlook 2007 doesn’t render graphics anymore, it just displays a placeholder with a small red ‘x’ in the upper left-hand corner. I’m running the program on much older hardware, a desktop, but the OS is Windows 7 Home Premium, 32-bit. About the only thing in common I have with the original poster is that I’m running MSE.

I thought I knew pretty much anything I needed to know with Windows 7, but this “Trust Center” that was mentioned is unfamiliar to me. Is it something in MSE I need to check? Or am I getting confused by something that is unique to ZoneAlarm?

2 things could be causing these issues, firstly, if you ‘trust’ the email sender or domain, the images normally appear fine – only recommended for emails you get regular and trust the sender. Secondly, if IE is installed, you will need to empty the temporary file cache every now and then to allow emails to pull down images — to do with Outlook 2007/2010’s HTML renderer being IE and not Word as in previous editions of Outlook.

I found that if i changed the temp file size on the browser to 512MB, this issue rarely happened to my users. since moving to IE8 corp build a few months ago and doing some tweaks, this issue is pretty much gone.

Actually, 2007 and 2010 use a “Word-based” rendering engine for HTML, while 98-2003 used Internet Explorer. However, they may well all share the same cache folders, since even though Word has fewer features, at base it probably uses IE components to retrieve images.

If I can just add my tuppence worth…

We have recently upgraded from IE6 to IE8 and are using Outlook 2003.

All worked fine with graphics (we have selected do not automatically download pictures or other content option in Outlook) however we were always able to right click the graphic to display.

Ever since upgrading to IE8, we have found a number of users have issue with this…if they have full opened the email into its own window and try to right click the graphic to display the graphic does not appear and another wee red cross is displayed. If you right click the graphic in Outlook’s quick view then it will display (most of the time..).

I had though to check my outlook related internet folder to see if it had grown to such as size that it needed clearing out, which as far as the registry tells me is called OLK3 and is a subfolder or temporary internet files. On checking – this no longer exists. Could this be related?
