      Thanks Dave,

I’m wondering though if there is going to be an upgrade for “SystemWorks Pro” as well. I really like the package that SystemWorks has and if Norton is going to come out with SystemWorks 2003, it would be prudent for me to wait rather than upgrading just the AV. grin

I have seen nothing of this, also NO sign of it on the beta site.

I will be adding it to my 2002 Suite, with is working just fine in Windows XP.

According to Symantec’s web site, NAV 2003 has “ENHANCED! Automatically removes viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.”.

I sure hope that’s an option. I would never allow any software to “Automatically removes viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.”.

      What

      • #611638

I agree. exclamation I usually like to wait for the first service pack before making the plunge into the “bug pit”. Buy it if you need to live on the edge immediatly but if you wait one to four weeks it will be sold for about $18 at most system builder sites as the current NAV2002 is now priced. One example is http://www.buycheapsoftware.com/details.asp?productID=519%5B/url%5D

        • #611825

My sister recently purchased NAV 2002 at no cost after rebates.
I think it was at Comp USA.

In any case, NAV does not really issue SPs, instead they bundle software changes along with the VD updates, so you cannot easily tell when software has changed.

      • #611726

I have run the public beta and have seen no problems.

By the time one waits for the discount prices one may need to renew their subscription to the new virus def files. It pays to be protected.

Also, most people have to be the first to get one of those super duper games but when it comes to protection, they will wait and let every one else be the tester. Makes NO since to me.

What new features are in NAV 2003?
It was worth getting , say, NAV 2002 for the enhanced script blocking, what additional protection does NAV 2003 offer?

          • #611833

If you were to go to the webpages about Nortons AV 2003 you could read the following:

NEW! Detects and blocks viruses in instant message attachments.
NEW! Exclusive Worm Blocking technology detects worms such as Nimda in outgoing mail to prevent them from infecting other computers.
ENHANCED! Automatically removes viruses, worms, and Trojan horses.

Scans and cleans both incoming and outgoing email messages.
Downloads new virus definitions automatically to protect against new viruses.**
Script Blocking defends against fast-moving script-based viruses such as “ILoveYou” and “Anna Kournikova.”
Worm Blocking and Script Blocking can detect new threats even before virus definitions are created for them.
Includes step-by-step instructions for installation, even on a computer that has already been infected.

First of all I`m very satisfied with Norton A.V. it`s simply the best V-Scanner available.
But,you say one of the new features is:”Exclusive Worm Blocking technology detects worms such as Nimda in =OUTGOING= mail to prevent
              them from infecting other computers.”
I,could be wrong but isn`t the whole idea of a V-Scanner to protect my pc against these sort of threats in the first place?
In other words if Norton A.V. keeps my machine clean(wich it does)why does it need to scan OUTGOING mail.
I`ve got Norton 2002 running and that has the outgoing mail scan and I`ve always wondered why it needs to do that.
Because if my machine is clean how can I,infect other machines?

              Greetz.

            • #611984

Outgoing scan protection is to protect everyone in your address book from you! But you’re right… if Norton knows you’ve got Nimda, why wouldn’t it pick it up and block the infection in the first place?!?! Maybe it’s a “me too” feature that doesn’t add much.

            • #611993

I saw that, but they do not interest me.

And I most certainly do not want anything that automatically removes anything.
And I do not want new definitions downloaded automatically, tho I expect that there’s an option to disable this feature.

            Howard,

I found a few reviews online yesterday about Norton AV 2003 and they were mainly positive. But at least two reviewers said that it wasn’t worth the extra money to upgrade from 2002 to 2003. In short, there isn’t much that has changed.

            • #611939

But if your AV subscription runs out, are you just going to renew or go for a upgrade, they run out at 1 year from install?
I jave a month left on my machines. evilgrin devil

As for the OUT going, you know you are NOT sending a new strain. If you have not sent a email, and the sending screen pop up you know that you have a problem.

              Dave,

I will probably renew since what I read on the reviews wasn’t stellar in regard to new features. My subscriptions don’t run out until January of next year anyway. I am running Norton SystemWorks 2002 and love it; like all the previous versions of this product. Personally, if I had only a month to go on my AV Subscriptions, I’d go ahead and renew them now just in case there is a problem. Better safe than sorry, eh! grin

            • #611946

Yes, I am running the 2002 Suite also, but there does not appear to be a upgrade to the suit or I am going for the AV upgrade. With 4 machines on Windows XP I trust NO ones email and or other source of a virus.

laugh Can’t be too careful I guess. For me, I think the Norton AV 2002 is sufficient enough for my PC’s. Between Norton AV, Outpost Pro (firewall) and my Linksys Router, my worry level is about nil. The AV definitions are what catch the “bad guys” and not the “bells and whistles”, which to be sure, some are mighty attractive at times. But not this time for me. grin

I for one will not fall prey again to Norton’s overblown product claims & all their advertising buddies’ hoopala as they failed miserably after shelling out top dollar to quickly install the ‘best’ w/ the NAV 2002!!

It’s a good tip to wait for the 2003 version to be released, hope it is out before mine is due for renewal in Nov. crossfingers

            • #612469

They (Nortons) say it will be shipping the first week of Sept, which is next week.

Outgoing protection is worthwhile if you inadvertently turn off AutoProtect and do not do a full system scan before you next send email. Of course, I use eudora, so that’s less of a concern.

As I understand it, a VD renewal is only $3.95. So, unless there are significant enhancements, I’ll likely upgraded only every other release, or do what my sister did, she got NAV 2002 for no cost after rebates, so I might be able to do the same for NAV 2003 in a year or so.

            • #611994

Somebody in Symantec tech support told me the same thing a few weeks ago.

        • #611985

Well, yes, one has to run something, but if last year’s version can use the current definition files, the urgency seems to be lessened, and one can wait for the x.02 release.
