Norton Script Detection (OE6)

Im using NAV 2002 on a 98 SE with MSIE & OE 6, and my neighbor is using XP Pro, NAV 2003 same MSIE & OE and both of us seem to have recently started to get red X’s instead of graphics or images in our email. Kind of odd it happened on 2 machines which are totally different, yet same problem at the same time. :Have checked the obvious, TOOLS>OPTIONS made sure the pictures are turned on, and the security settings in MSIE and OE are set to allow scripting. Anyone else out there with the same problem?

What ISP are these emails coming from?

AOL and Hotmail are NOT storing ALL of the images for life. As a mater of fact some are stored only for a few days. So you will get the red “x” because the image is NOT found. I have seen this on NON NAV machines, so I do NOT think it is a Norton problem.

Hi Dave, its not Hotmail or AOL, just direct email from my long term reliable server that has always been ok with images in emails. Most of the imagery has been added from my own machine’s collection, the same with my neighbor who is having problems in XP Pro, OE 6. I would not have thought it to be a NAV problem, because Ive been using NAV for 3 years without this showing up. I think it could be a comedy of errors relating to the firewall. Thanks for your input, always helpful to hear other people’s thoughts.

You might also find that if your server is running slow, the down load will time out, and the graphics will NOT be found. With all of the Blaster’s looking for a machine, I have noticed that many of the servers are running a bit slower than normal.

Thanks Dave and SMBP – The problem seems to be associated more with the XP machine than mine because I only noticed red x’s instead of graphics when my neighbor has sent graphics in email to me, she in turn is hearing back from others that they too are unable to see her graphics – so the problem does seem to come back to 1 machine. YES, Dave, it started whe the whole Blaster thing began, so quite possibly it could be the server involved. Many thanks to both Dave and SMBP, I will have a look at the articles from the MSKB as well. One can never have too much information. [thanikyou]

Cyberdance, I split your message into a new thread because it sounds like quite a different issue. Feel free to edit your Subject to fit the problem more closely (e.g., like what I used).

There may be a feature of Norton Internet Security or similarly named “firewall like” product that allows you to block images in HTML messages on the theory that many such images, in Spam at least, return an identifier that shows you are a valid mail recipient. This could be considered a “privacy” feature. In a completely different thread, it came to light that the configuration dialogs in NIS differ from version to version. Perhaps a scan of the Symantec Knowledgebase would shed light?

(Not sure why that page loads SO slowly tonight!)

I’ve seen a few Red X KB’s –some relate to different issues with IE–and of course when you hear that you start thinking that OE is a component of IE, but this one seems most on point to the problem you posted you and your neighbor are having–take a look:

246186: OLEXP: Image May Not Appear in Message Received with Outlook Express

I know it’s up through 5.5 at the top, but it may well apply/extrapolate to 6.0. You might try it’s solution, and also this problem may have been fixed in OE6’s SP1 which is a separate download–they have also had a major security hotfix since–see below:

I looked carefully at the issues fixed and though I did not see explicit language about the red X’s it wouldn’t surprise me if it might fix another issue that influences them–and it does fix some problems that could happen down the road. The KB seems right on target however.
