HP C4380 MFD Scanner was perfect last week!

Today all scanning software report “cannot connect to scanner”

This is connected to W1n 10 Pro 21H2 v19044.1949 through Wi Fi router.

Removed the most recent “update” KB 5016592 – Communication Restored.

Thanks for your product (not) testing MS!

    All updates now paused.

They did test it and warn that printers would be impacted.  You have to “refind” the USB connection and then it will work.

Windows updates seem to have problems with ‘knocking off’ Hewlett Packard printers.  About 18 months ago, one of the updates knocked off a friends’ HP combined printer/scanner/fax wifi connected unit.  Like the OP, the dreaded ‘cannot connect’ message came up.  I tried the usual fixes including download and install the current driver from HP as well as deleting the printer, then installing it fresh from the CD that came with it.  Nothing worked.

The solution?  ‘Roll back’ the update to the recovery point (search for ‘create restore point’ and use ‘restore’ option) hopefully created by Windows before it did the update.  Then, quickly, go to ‘settings’ / ‘update & security’ and repeatedly delay updates until it won’t let you…4 weeks, I think it is.  That will give Microsoft a month to come up with a fix for it.  If it repeats, roll it back again.

Thankfully, the delay in performing the update again for my friend didn’t cause any problems.

      Thank you Susan,

Indeed it does work by USB. But, this does n’t restore connection via wi-fi.

      I want wi-fi – I don’t want wires trailing round the “computer room”. That’s why I bought the C4380.

About 18 months ago MS prevented the use of software that was vital to HP’s own support package.

KB5016592 is a .NET preview update

don’t click on the check for updates button or KB5016592 may get automatically downloaded & installed

edit: on the other hand, my HP Envy Photo 7858 printer (connected thru Wifi/WLAN) is still working fine, even with the KB5016592 .net and KB5016688 updates installed on my Win10 Home 21H2 laptop 🙂 .
