• No standby option (XP pro SP1)

    Hi everyone,

I just upgraded (clean install, with completely reformat) my old Gateway G6 P350 machine to Windows XP (I installed 256MB RAM too). No problems, except that there doesn’t seem to be any standby option, either in Power Options or having clicked ‘Shutdown’. Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how to solve it? Would upgrading BIOS make a difference? Hibernate seems to work OK (although with occasional strange behaviour, such as spontaneously restarting as soon as hibernation is complete), but no standby.

    Thanks a lot.

      Alex,
If you see no options for standby in the “power options” | advanced location, then I would say that your system is not capable to do so. A BIOS update might do it, you would have to check the update details to see if it included standby features.
In the XP help section for standby it says:
      ————————————————————————-
To use Windows Power Options, you must have a computer that is set up by the manufacturer to support these features. For more information, see the documentation that came with your computer.

Thanks for the reply. You may be right, although it’s a bit strange, because under Windows 98 the computer did have the ability to ‘Suspend’, which seems to me more like Standby than Hibernate under XP. Also, under Power Options | Advanced, it does say something along the lines of “Windows has detected that your computer is capable of advanced power management…”.

Anyway, will see what the BIOS update does.
