No spell check, no proofing?!! (2000)

Word helps me keep folks from thinking I’m a moron because I can’t spell worth a toot. I became suspicious about my work computer lately as it was not correcting some of my normal gaffs. A quick visit to Tools > Options showed me that “Hide spelling errors …” and “Hide grammatic errors …” were both checked. Unfortunately, they are also both greyed out! I’ve been using Word since version 2 and have never come across this error. Any suggestions or ideas?
