I use soundblaster16. Recently I have been unable to hear CD’s or sound from downloads. I have checked many things and even re-installed the program a few times. The only thing I have found is in System Information, Components, Mutlimedia, Audio Codecs – cdaudio is disabled, as are other audio components. Is this the cause? How do I rectify this?
    Thanks

What operating system are you using? Helps to know. Have you upgraded the o/s, or installed any new software recently? Any clues as to something that might have disabled cdaudio, etc.
Does your motherboard include any onboard sound? If so, can you try using that instead? It could be that there is a problem with the hardware itself. Do you get any other sounds?
Have you reinstalled the soundcard driver, or just the software? Try Control Panel>System>Device Manager, double click the sound card and select Driver>Update Driver. Unless you have recently upgraded the o/s to a version not supported by the cd-rom that came with the soundcard, use that as the source for the driver and reinstall.

Many thanks for your response. I am using Win 98. Only minor upgrades but problem was there before that. I have a feeling that part of the problem is being caused by an internal modem card I have installed. I have been able to get some sounds but after re-booting a few times the problem recurs. Am working through clean boots to try and isolate exactly where it changes and why. Have tried updating the driver but that has not changed the problem. Am also trying to work through the fixes suggested by Soundblaster – no success yet.

Many thanks though for your advice so far.

Have you tried updating or reinstalling the modem driver? Worth trying, if that is the source of the problem. Also, check Start>Programs>Accessories>System Information>Hardware and look at Conflicts/Sharing to see if the modem and soundcard come up together.

You can try Start….Run and type in dxdiag

It does some diagnostics on video and sound.

It may help in this case.
