I have three computers with windows 7 (with all updates applied) – 32-bit Home edition. On the latest and best one of them I have two problems, maybe interrelated ???
1 – I can not make any restorepoint. Every time I update or (un-)install something I have to wait 20 minutes till he decides to skip the restorepoint procedure and than the instalment is done. 😡
2 — I can not make any back-up using the windows back-up-program. This program starts looking for a back-up medium and keeps doing so for hours. (there is a back-up hard drive intern, that is recognized by bios and by explorer).
    Error message: Timeout shadowcopy 0 x 81000101
    What I tried already:
    – Put off Systemrestore, reboot and put on systemrestore.
    – Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider : startup automatic — apply / ok — reboot
    – Volume shadow copy : started
    – Background … Transfer : Started
    – Windows Backup : started
    – Min Diff Area File Size : first put to 0 and than made 10 x bigger than before : 3.000.
    – Disk check : oké
None of this works. Who has a idea what to do, or what to check at least.
    Many Thanks, Ferdinand

      From: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-backup-shadow-copy-timeout-0x81000101/43ff78ef-e351-4352-b6a4-75f140a84a98
      Step 1

Verify if these two services are running:
      1. Volume Shadow Copy service
      2. Windows backup

Also ensure that their dependency services are running. You can check this information from services.msc. Follow the steps below to check the services.
      1. Go to start and type services.msc in the search field.
      2. Locate the two services.
      3. Right-Click on the service one at a time.
      4. Select properties.
      5. Go to Dependencies Tab.
      6. Note the dependency services.
      7. Make sure they’re also running.
      8. To start a service, right click on it and select start.

      Step 2
From many users facing the same issue, turning off system restore for the hard disk on which Windows is installed and turning it back on seems to have solved the issue, you may try the same.

Access the link below and follow the steps to turn System Restore on or off.

        Dear Jerry,
Thanks for noting all this steps, as you can read in my first post, I had done nr 2 and most of nr 1 (the error code guided me to the same post at Microsoft-answers). But your explanation on the dependency services is new, I’ll check whether there is one that I didn’t see before.

      Dear Jerry,

I have checked (step 1) every process – they and the dependency services, all start automatically.
      I have redone step 2…..
Nothing. No backups, no Restore-point, both processes start and loop eternally.
There is another problem in my windows 7, who knows more than Microsoft ???
