I bought a sewing kit for my better half, because it contained one of these gizzmos she had seen, but never had. Now we’re trying to figure out what it’s for and how it’s used. The notches in the metal rule are at 1 inch intervals. The little red plastic bit can slide the length of the groove. It’s probably for dress making, but ???

I would say it is for taking up a dress or a skirt – you run the rule round the hem to make sure the ‘take-up’ is even around the circumference.

Edited to add a couple of links:

Also can be used as a knitting gauge – too measure how many stiches per inch

Thanks all. I get the general idea. We’ll probably figure it out fully once we’ve worked out how to use the VCR properly. grin

And it is used to set the measurement for button holes so they are all the same on a garment. A handy gadget, but I find that I sneak out to the shed to get Mr Johbots’s set square from his tool box because it help me with getting horizontal right. (Pendant alert – but you know what I mean!)

… measurement for button holes … (Pendant alert – but you know what I mean!)

Didn’t you mean “pedant” or was this an unintentional but exceptionally good pun?

Many Lounges ago, when the Lounge Pedant went by another name, someone – it may have been Bowlie – used pendant as a pun or joke, and it stuck, more or less.

Well thanks, Hans. I hate being left dangling.

Shouldn’t purling be in the programming forum?
BTW where *IS* the programming forum nowadays.
As a side joke, my friend is in Bradford (Ontario) and didn’t realize that Bradford UK was a hub of the woolen industry years ago, and that there was therefore a good connection between the Jacquard Loom and DST software.

I have never quite figured out, whow or what is the Lounge Pedant?

The Lounger Now Known As BATcher used to point out small mistakes in posts, in particular spelling and grammar errors. Because of that, some users jokingly called him the Lounge Pedant, and he sometimes used this as an honorary title.

Well, well, well, I’m amazed that our paths have never crossed, for my spelling and (even more so) grammar is appalling. I’m not wanting to reignite any fires, so If I see BATcher online, i’ll log off quick.

            Relax.
The lounge pedant has never caught me out with any small typos or mistakes.
He is far too busy hammering my truly massive ones!

The Lounge Pedant also had a number of assistants who assisyted in his work and now is the case when I note your bad usage of “…i’ll log off quick…” in the quoted text. Please capitalise your I’s in future when using it in the form of the singular pronoun of the first person please.

Deputy Assistant Lounger [use of singular pronoun of the first person (nominative case) Division]

Huff, I’m not taking that from no deputy! Where’s the organ grinder?

I’m off. And I’m taking my cookies with me!!

I’ll tell you what – take that advice, fold it till it’s all corners, ans then stick it somewhere uncomfortable…

I’ve been using the cummings standard for more than thirty-five years (ever since i had to use an ancient IBM electric typer with wonky shifts), and it is now my standard format for anything i write that i’m not getting paid for.

Well then I guess, if your spelling is so bad, it very well could be “appealing”! 🙂
