No. of words in document (Word 2000)

I need to know how many words are in the body of a pleading (excluding caption page, TOC, TOA, signature block).

I tried highlighting the portion of the document I wanted to count and then clicking File > Properties > Statistics tab, but the number of words shown is always the total number of words in the entire document.

Is there a statistic stored somewhere that will show you the number of words in the highlighted portion only?

Tools menu, Word Count… option – if you haven’t selected anything (you see the blinking insertion cursor), words in the entire document are counted; if you select part of the document, you’ll get a word count for that part.
