Arrrrgh. I see so much BS floating around. This is one of the worst. Microsoft has released a list of features that are removed or deprecated in Win 1

Paint is a humble little example of when Microsoft was producing useful stuff, meeting real needs rather than “needs” created by promotion and hype.  It solved a problem for me when I realized that it could be used to covert a screen shot to just about any image format.

And yes, I remember Outlook Express with a certain fondness, largely for its simplicity.

MS could have probably overcome its loss of monopoly if it embarked on the serious development of the new “features” of Win10 as useful applications and licensed them. But, of course, in typical monopolist fashion it bullied them into the OS because it does no longer know how to compete and monopolists always realize that they lost the power to force way too late.

I have found MS Paint to be a very useful program. And if you are careful about the order in which you add to a drawing in Paint, you can use Undo and Copy/Paste effectively to work around the limits of no layers.

As Kirsty mentioned early this morning, there are some significant repercussions.

What are the significant repercussions? (Apart from tech support scammers missing syskey.exe when they fail to get your credit card number.) Kirsty didn’t mention any.

      • #126180

Yeah, I too went into that thread to find out what she said the repercussions would be of removing EMET, and didn’t find a writeup of them there.

It’s a fantastic program, BTW. I’d be sorry to see it go.

        • #126200

Maybe the difference between a mention and a write up…?
          🙂

but it would be hard to imagine system image backups not being missed by those that still use them.

          • #126202

The context was about EMET, not system image backups. Here’s what Woody wrote:

One important feature that’s getting the axe: EMET. As Kirsty mentioned early this morning, there are some significant repercussions.

            Maybe Woody simply misspoke?   🙂

Yet another reason not to waste time upgrading to current versions of Win10Pro.

            • #126249

Oops – so it was, sorry. My apologies!

There was a recent discussion, started by @sessh, after finding an article on Windows 7 with EMET being safer than Windows 10, which was very interesting on the subject too. Check it out from this post down 🙂

            ?

They won’t be missed because they’re not going anywhere.

            And that didn’t sound “significant”:
“System Image Backup (the Win7-era “ghost” backup capability, built into Windows) is going on the Deprecated list, but MS hasn’t fixed or improved it in nigh on a decade, either.”

      • #126192

Yeah, I’m glad (for dumb users’ sake) syskey is being removed, so the scammers can find another racket to try.

EMET is my main problem, but we’re running CBB anyway so I’m not terribly worried about it yet. I’m hoping (praying?) that Bitdefender Endpoint (BEST) is good enough at blocking things before they get to EMET and it won’t really be an issue regardless. Sad to see EMET get pulled though…it’ll definitely continue being deployed on everything that isn’t 10 FCU though, to protect the majority of our users who aren’t smart enough to not click on things they shouldn’t. *grumble grumble*

Perhaps this information might be useful to users of Windows 10, at least with some of those disappearing applications:

When I moved from XP to Windows 7, some years ago, I noticed that there was no ready way anymore to change bitmap pictures into GIF in Win 7.

So I ported MS Office Pictures Manager from XP to Win 7, where it still does the job of converting bitmap to GIF just as it did in XP, even though XP was 32 bits and Win 7 is 64 bits.

Quote of the day on this topic, courtesy of Wayne Williams at BetaNews…

“So Paint is not dead, it’s just not deemed worthy enough to be part of Windows going forward, and with Paint 3D included in the new OS that kind of makes sense. No doubt other, older Windows applications will find themselves dropped in a similar way in years to come. Not dead, just sitting forgotten about, and gathering dust, in the great Windows Store retirement home.”

HLN TV ran the story today that people are up in arms about losing MS Paint.

Here’s a question, do you think it’ll get patched out of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 with a downloadable version like Windows Journal?

      • #126324

Supposedly it will become a free app downloadable from the Windows Store.

        • #126356

Fresh Paint is in no way comparable to MS Paint on the Desktop. Nowhere near as many features.
If we’re really worried about the demise of Paint, maybe Paint.NET will do the job, although with a slight learning curve, and having to use .NET Framework until it goes out of support. Then…??

FWIW, I use Pinta on Ubuntu Linux for this sort of quick-editing.
