I’m using an older computer to host 16-bit home automation software. So, I’ve installed Win10 32-bit. It’s an Asus B250M-A mobo, which will not support an upgrade to Windows 11. So, I’ve decided to use this as my home automation machine. It had been running Win10 64bit before being repurposed.

Apparently, Asus does not list ANY 32-bit drivers for this mobo (computer isn’t *that* old!) Whatever Intel shows as 32-bit, “will not run on this version of the OS”, or words to that affect. I even tried running the Intel installation in compatability mode as a last resort, but no luck.

I can probably live with the basic Microsoft VGA driver, but I’d rather get the right one, if there’s some trick or other alternative someone can suggest.

    Thanks!

Remove the driver you have from device manager and then check for new hardware and let Windows install a driver.

Already did that. Windows just reinstalls the Microsoft Basic Video Driver, sames as it was, nothing specific for the video chipset.

        Thanks for your input.

      What is the software?
Have you thought about replacing it with something newer?

      cheers, Paul

Thanks for your input. But, if there was something newer, I’d already be using it. The developers who wote the software for this device never release anything ported to 32-bit, so I’m stuck with what I have. I can live with, and make it work, so that’s what I’ll have to do.

        Thanks for trying

You could try Intel’s Driver & Support Assistant tool (DSA) to see if it can find a compatible driver for it?

Already tried the Driver & Support Assistant tool, but it didn’t work.

      Thanks for trying.

When you say the computer isn’t that old, phasing out of 32 bit drivers means that the motherboard is most like not old.

What home automation software runs on 16 bit dare I ask?

I really think you need to consider an alternative here as you are really painting yourself into a corner.

        Susan –

Thanks for your reply. No, the mobo is *not* that old, and the *only* Windows 10 drivers Asus supplies for it are 64 bit, which attests to it’s “newness”. But, it is old enough that I won’t be able to upgrade to Win 11. (Fails the TPM and processor requiements.) So, I felt repurposing it as a 32-bit machine would serve my purposes.

And, its sole purpose will be to interface with a JDS Stargate home automation controller that I installed in the late 90’s. Stargate uses a Windows app that’s used to configure it, and there never was a 32-bit version of that app, so I’m stuck running it on 32-bit Windows. I used to use a 32-bit virtual machine, but that got to be too much of a hassel.

I’m phasing Stargate out in favor af a Universal Devices ISY944i unit (AKA “Izzy”), which has taken over most of what I had Stargate doing (mostly lighting control.) But, Stargate does have some functionaltiy that is not present in Izzy, so while Izzy does most of the work, I’m still using some of Stargate’s features. When I built my house, I wired in a speaker system fed by a 70-volt line from a small Radio Shack PA amp. Startgate can interface with that, and send voice synthesized messages to the speakers, such as when an outdoor motion detector triggers. Can’t do that with Izzy. Or at least I haven’t yet figured out how to get Izzy to send messages through my Echo’s.

So, as you can see, I don’t ever expect this computer to do more that be my Stargate support. Will never have to connect with the Internet, etc. So, once Win10 support is phased out, I’ll just disconnect its LAN cable.

Probably more info that you cared to hear about, yes?

        Thanks again.

If you have a 64 bits CPU Why not install Windows x64 ?

You can easily install Windows 11 on unsupported PC using Rufus and other methods.
          Search the forum.

I’d go to a swap meet or ebay and buy an old computer.  I no longer have the patience and clearly this box wants to be 64 bit-ness.

In my original post, I stated that I need to run a 16-bit application, which will not run on a 64-bit version of Windows.

      Thanks anyway

What specific Intel CPU (model/part#) is installed on your Asus B250M-A motherboard?

      Win7 - PRO & Ultimate, x64 & x86
      Win8.1 - PRO, x64 & x86
      Groups A, B & ABS

Why have you given up on the VM? I always use VMs for that sort of thing.

      cheers, Paul

    • #2600745

I used a VM for quite a while after the switch to Windows 7 64. (I used Oracle’s Virtual Box) For my specific use, running control software for my Stargate home automation controller, I need access to the COM port, as that’s how the computer communicates with the HA controller. Whatever changes/updates to VM were made over time caused that to be increasingly unreliable. So, when a spare computer became available, I switched to a 32-bit version of windows. That was an old HP laptop, which would update to Win10, with all drivers available. When that laptop died, I switched to this desktop unit which has no 32 bit graphics driver.

You’ve piqued my interest on using a VM again. Maybe I’ll give it another try. Thanks!

I have a different setup, but a similar situation.

I run Win8.1 and Win10 in Parallels VMs on a MacBook Pro. With the VMs, a run a Daktronics console that controls the computerized scoring and the Scoreboard for the sport of diving. The connection is made through a USB -> DB9 RS232 adapter tp a COM port on the console. The adapter requires a driver, and I have found that an older driver (2010), not the one MS offers, works.

With all these requirements, a host OS that doesn’t support Windows-based Meet Control software, use of a VM to control old technology (Serial connections) on a host that doesn’t even have the needed ports, and finding an older driver that makes the adapter work, I have found hardheaded persistence sometimes is rewarding.

        Don’t give up easily!
