I have a machine that will not allow me to get into the TCP/IP settings to set the DNS.

It is running Win2k on a domain. Neither the domain administrator, nor the local administrator can get access. The Properties button is greyed out.

Do you have any Group Policy Objects (GPOs) on the domain, or a local security policy on the machine. If so then have a look at the values under User ConfigurationAdministrative TemplatesNetworkNetwork and Dial-up Connections.

I created an MMC for local group policy. Nothing was configured under that entry. I configured the one about denying access to DNS by diabling it.

There is still no change. the Properties button is still greyed out

I can’t think of any other obvious possibilities.

Just to make sure that I have understood correctly. Can you give a better description of which dialog box you are looking at with the greyed out properties button. Maybe even a screenshot.

The properties box I am in is:
Ricght click Network connections | Properties. Then select TCP/IP from the list of services and protocols. The third button along is Properties. This is the one that is greyed out so I cannot get in and manually set the IP address, nor the DNS server IP address.

This is one of 26 machines in a Lab environment. They are all the same model and build, and all the others are fine. Its just the one that wont let me in.

Sorry, I have no more ideas on what might be causing this. I hope someone else can help.

Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing TCP/IP?

Yes I tried that. The buttons are all there, but there is no reaction. Clicking the Uninstall button does nothing.

              Thanks for your suggestions anyway.

I am off on a two week holiday for now, so I’ll get back to it with a fresh mind later. clapping
