There has been some speculation as to whether various versions of Internet Explorer are immune to this Virus. From what I have seen, the answer is somewhat unclear.
That said, the approach we’re using here, is simply to use Netscape.
Now I, being one to defy convention, pretty much refuse to use Netscape for anything, however I do support it… (go figure.) That said, I did have a Nimda.A scare, and thought you all would like to know what to do if you encounter this nasty bug.
There is a nice AV software package out there, AVG Anti Virus. the recent patches to this include recognition of Nimda.A. Best part is, it’s free. Very useful now that InnoculateIT is no longer a free, public, utility.
The parent Company for AVG, GRISoft, also has a util to remove Nimda.A from an infected system. It’s a DOS utility, which hunts down and removes this nasty little @#$!%.
This util will NOT work if you’re connected to an infected LAN, if you run it, and reconnect to your network, you’ll get the bug back again. You can get the util Here. You can also find more details on the bug there as well.
It’s a DOS patch, so you admins should have no trouble running an update program to get it out to the masses, if needed.
Nimda.A traffic is tapering off slowly as webmasters and admins get smart and protect thier systems, of course, it’ll be a while before it’s “eradicated,” so it’s best to do all you can to prevent infection in the first place.
