As promised, with this month’s cumulative update the “news and weather” appeared on my taskbar.   I had carefully squirreled away the “Disable” registry mod … but I discovered that when I right clicked on the icon part of the menu that popped up included “turn off”.  Is that all it takes to make it go away?   Under what circumstances would I/should I do the registry hack?

That’s all you need to do. It’s just if you want a different method.

Is there a security vulnerability with the weather notification on the taskbar (like the old Windows 7 gadgets)?

Is there a performance/memory hit from the notification?

Or is the main issue the usual MS annoying intrusion and attempt to push us over the Edge?

I also object to N&W icon loading Edge instead of my default browser (Opera), and as far as I can tell it’s all based on Accuweather, which doesn’t seem to be localized enough for my little corner of northern Southeastern Europe. The Norwegian Meteorological Institute and NRK through Yr.no serves up more accurate forecasts, as do DarkSky and Wunderground (when its closest station is online). If and when N&W allows me to use my default browser and choose my weather forecaster, I’ll be a lot happier.

See EdgeDeflector : respect your default browser setting

I think the weather source is FORECA via MSN weather.

Possibly, same as the Weather app. But the page that loads in Edge has related weather stories and more than half of them are from Accuweather.

How safe and reliable is EdgeDeflector version 1.2.2.0?

I use National Weather Service for Brooklyn, N.Y. But, frankly, if I open five different weather services, I can get three or more different reports. Sometimes they vary by as much as five degrees. I think it depends on where their local weather station is.

But I happen to like the taskbar update. I just wonder if there’s any security or performance hazard.

I don’t know. But it looks like something I could use.

I really wish MS would have left the default function of the Win 7 search box to search my own computer. It reminded me of an old favorite: AltaVista Personal 97

Your wish is answered — I had the same problem/complaint when I first got win10 and then I discovered “OpenShell” and win10 magically became comfortable…  I’ve never looked back.  Try it!

Head up – if you have your task bar on top, you’ll wind up with a blank space where news and weather “should” be.  It’s unresponsive.  I got rid of it by moving the taskbar to the bottom, turning off news and weather, and then moving back where i want it.
