Blurry text in News and Interests – A controversial feature?

“With the release of June 2021 cumulative updates for Windows 10, Microsoft enabled News and Interest for everyone, causing quite a disturbance amid users. Many people dislike the fact that News and Interests take a lot of space on the taskbar, opens on hover, and has poor performance. Blurry text now joined the list of annoyances that force users to disable the new feature for good.”

      https://winaero.com/microsoft-confirms-the-issue-with-blurry-text-in-news-and-interests/

Microsoft released the unpolished version of News and Interests

“For some reasons, it appears that the rollout was rushed and the company decided to enable the unpolished version of News and Interests for everyone without addressing the critical bugs.”

Thankfully we have our Patch Lady Susan Bradley to warn us about these annoying updates, and the AskWoody community to help resolve issues.
And Thank You Susan for repairing the Eyestrain Generator, the light grey is now a little easier to read.

Can’t promise anything, but let me check with my WordPress folks and we’ll see what we can do to increase the contrast.

Why is this garbage even in an operating system?

Yes, rhetorical, I understand why – Microsoft wants to monetize every copy and we are the product being sold, and no longer the user – but I’m not happy about it.

LTSC should be the Pro edition.  Let the Home users be the commoditized fodder if sacrificial lambs must exist.

Can News and Interests be disabled?

      • #2371630

Yes – either using a registry key ,  or right mouse clicking in the task bar, going to news and interests and turning off, or using group policy.

So, they moved the Start menu and icons over to the middle of the taskbar.  To be different, I guess.  But I love the Baidu page linked to in the Gizmodo article.  I don’t speak or read Chinese.  However, I’ll take a shot at translating anyway.  I’ll probably get a lot of it wrong, but…

Post 1: “Here are some early screenshots of Windows 11.”  [includes screenshots]

Post 2: dd [Someone typed something in error]

Post 3 – 6: Something along the lines of, “What were they thinking?”, “They just moved stuff around – did they do anything we’ve been asking for?”, “What’s up with the loofah wallpaper?”, etc.

Post 7: “I want REAL Windows back!” [sad face with tear emoticon]

        Post 8: “Me Too.”

Post 9: “Here’s the article where these originated.”  [Hyperlink to an article on The Verge with more screenshots.]

Post 10-13: [Additional complaints, one with a graphic character expressing displeasure.]

Post 14: “There is a way to move the taskbar icons back where they belong, if you think that having them in the middle is silly.”  [Includes a screenshot showing the icons on the left side of the taskbar.]

        Post 15: “That’s much better.”

The first post on page 2 begins with the English phrase “classic shell.”  I feel your pain.

I don’t speak Chinese, but I speak fluent Nerd.

“Might” have blurry text”.  It’s readable, but looks like it’s poorly upscaled for smaller fonts. Some people “might” not notice using an older display.

Here’s a toast to Microsoft being the leader in pushing things to users when they’re only 98% ready!

Are you signing off for the poor unsuspecting public when you say “your beta testers”? If so, wrong term. Microsoft treats the public as Charlie testers.

Screenshots show a simpler interface, plus a wallpaper that looks like a loofah.

All I see is a blank black screen with three side by side, touching each other dots in the center of the screen.

The one thing I won’t stand for is rounded “corners”. There is no such thing! If it is rounded then it is not a corner…geez….. I recall Microsoft did that once before and I never used that version of Windows…just like I never used Windows 7 because of how ugly the GUI was. Windows 8 was much better GUI wise.

I don”t have News and Interests yet so I don’t know it looks (however it looks, I’ll get rid of it immediately. I’m on KB5003173 May 11 update).

blurry news & interests text bug also occurs on 1909 as well

except now 1909 users have a new preview update (KB5003698) released June 15 that fixes this problem while those running 2004, 20H2 or 21H1 will have to wait for a fix coming either late June or better yet wait next month for the normal July 2021 patch Tuesday updates to come out by then

      • #2371854

It will probably be out next week.  They always put it on the “D” week.

Insiders for 20H2 & 21H1 recently got the KB5003690 update (build 1904x.1081) which includes the fix for this problem

and yes that update will be out sometime next week for those who check for updates (aka. seekers) that are not in any of the insider channels

I have had a different problems with News and Interests. I am at Version 21H1 Build 19043.1052. It is not blurry, but when I turn it off, my System Tray disappears! If I keep it on (with or without the text) the System Tray seems to stay. I played around with it for awhile because this is not a feature (in its current state) that I want. I also have visible the Touch Keyboard Button. If I hide that button, and hide the News and Interest feed, the System Tray reappears and seems to stay…so far! I will monitor this closely. It is quite possible that this is only an issue for my very customized Windows 10. But for me there seems to be a bad interaction between the two buttons.

      • #2372319

Unfortunately, when I logoff and logon again, my System Tray is gone. But if I show News and Interests and then Hide it, the System Tray stays. Very strange. I am trying to decide whether or not to Restore the Reflect image I took before updating my Windows 10.

        • #2372340

Problem solved: Because I have bad eyes, I have my monitor display set to 125%. When I changed it to the recommended 100%, problem disappeared.

Thanks. It also fixed my problem at having my display(s) at 125% and having my System Tray disappear.
