I am running windows 7 Home premium 64 Bit and did NOT purchase the microsoft ESU subscription so i understand that i no longer get security patches. My question is does it do any good to install the newest SSU kb4537829 from the MS catalog and can you? Should microsoft ever release a critical patch for windows 7 as they did for XP i figure this newest SSU may be needed?

First, there is a workaround to fool Microsoft’s ESU check. For now it works
https://www.ghacks.net/2020/02/13/it-appears-that-the-windows-7-esu-bypass-is-indeed-working/Second, you can enlist for 0Patch service (half the price in the first year, 1/4 of Microsoft’s price for the 3 years) : https://0patch.com/

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 29, 2020 at 11:53 am #2173227You can manually download and install SSU KB4537829, it doesn’t require ESU license itself but that won’t give any benefit, ESU updates will still not offered or installed without ESU license
This leads me to believe that I would receive an error message if ESU is not active on my machine. Try it & see perhaps, tosses coin.

AskWoody_MVPMarch 2, 2020 at 4:05 pm #2175225The KB4537829 SSU will install on ANY Win7 system, regardless of ESU status (as long as the older KB4490628 SSU is installed)
I know because I installed it myself on a Win7 home premium machine without an ESU license and it went through without any problems – no bypass esu hacks needed

GuestMarch 3, 2020 at 1:13 am #2175466I will most likely install ssu KB4537829 from MS catalog as i don’t think it will be offered in windows update after i clear it by installing the MSRT which is the only patch i recieved in february with windows 7 now in end of life status and not having a ESU license .
Thanks for the input everyone.

AskWoody LoungerMarch 7, 2020 at 11:50 pm #2177967Yet you may not be able to install KB4537829 (the latest SSU) now. For example, I installed the KB4528069 ESU Test Update back in November, yet yesterday I could not install it on one of my other Windows 7 machines. It installed fine, yet it uninstalled after rebooting. The same thing happened with KB4539602 which fixes wallpaper stretch issue. I installed it on January 14 on my main Win7 computer, yet it uninstalled itself when I tried to install it yesterday on my other Win7 computer. Both successfully installed yesterday on my other computer after I installed the ESU Bypass utility.
