I like to check executables with VirusTotal (subsidiary of Google) before installing software.

Using VirusTotal to check files does give the SHA256, but comes with the following included in their Ts&Cs:

“…you confirm that you are the original owner of any content you submit or that you have the necessary rights and permissions to authorise us to use your content.

When you upload or otherwise submit content, you give VirusTotal (and those we work with) a worldwide, royalty free, irrevocable and transferable licence to use, edit, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works, communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content.

If you do not want the content provided by you to VirusTotal to be disclosed in the manner set out in these Terms or in the Privacy Policy, do not send it/share it with VirusTotal or the VirusTotal Community.”

I don’t believe I would wish to go to the trouble of seeking the permission of the software developer, to upload within those requirements…

I assume that taken in the actual total context of their site, that “content” in the TOS is not referring to files or URL’s you submit for malware scanning, but rather is intended to cover any actual content you submit to them, for example anything you post in their community.  The TOS is clearly intended to cover all aspects of their service.
