GuestJuly 7, 2017 at 11:47 am #123751This problem may be related to Win 10’s default Fast Startup feature where the computer is always put into minimal Hibernate mode when the Shutdown button on the screen is clicked by the users, ie it is never shutdowned.
… In this way, users are probably fooled by M$ into believing that Win 10 boots/startups very fast when the Power switch is next pressed to startup the computer, when in actual fact the computer was waking up from minimal Hibernate mode.
… Smartphones also use this feature = Standby mode.It may be that the excessive use or abuse of the Hibernate mode by M$’s Win 10 caused the problem, ie the Surface Pro 2017 randomly going into Hibernate mode.
… Hibernate mode should rightly be used when we are in the middle of work/leisure at home and have to be interrupted for an extended period of time, eg by an unexpected visit from relatives or friends. Hibernate mode should not be used like it’s being used by M$, ie a false or pseudo Fast Startup.https://www.howtogeek.com/243901/the-pros-and-cons-of-windows-10s-fast-startup-mode/

I’d recommend that you return any Surface Pros that die unexpectedly, and get your hard earned money back and get something from a reputable system builder

ManagerJuly 7, 2017 at 6:57 pm #123789I have a Surface Pro 3. It’s nice for a light Win10 machine, but has many faults I’ve documented before – bouncy keyboard, noisy fan, continuing battery problems for some, and a dated design at this point.
Surface Pro 4 had so many driver problems I’m amazed anyone stuck with it.
Surface Book looks good for what it is, but there are equally good – and much less expensive – alternatives. XPS comes to mind, as do the Yoga and Spectre.
After the ongoing headaches with the Surface Pro 4, at least we’ve been spared Driver Hell.

The XPS 13 comes with a rating of 7/10 from ifixit.com, and if you read the teardown report, you can clearly see it’s been designed to be serviceable, in contrast to other devices… looking at you, Surface and Apple items. I knew that making things nearly unfixable wasn’t necessary to have them be thin and light!
I would hope that other XPS devices would be the same way as this one. Not that I am in the market for one, but I do like to window shop from time to time.

Acer Swift Go 14, i5-1335U/16GB, Kubuntu 24.04 (and Win 11)

AskWoody LoungerJuly 8, 2017 at 2:13 pm #123859I think the topic says it all really. I am Sort of being old fashioned here, but is it really necessary to have somthing “Razor thin” and light as a feather as a travelling companion, or take to bed as some do or the other side of the world. Software and acessories can take care of most of the day to day stuff (OS issues Dvrs etc) say about 3-4 memory sticks “jangling” in you pocket (get the ones with covers *survival tip* ) At the very least the average user should be able to accomplish these three things, change a battery, get at and or replace the motherboard CMOS battery and or a RAM upgrade. If your tough on your lappy at the very least the ability to “reseat” RAM should be a must. My old travelling companion was about 3-4 lb’s and the thickness of a good size book and that was no trauma at all to carry around, and probably work in Bed although I never could, didnt like the position or the inevitable fluff that gets in;
But I suppose that seems to be the way the world is going, maybe they will see the error of thier ways after being deluged with an Avalanche of returns. If the pricing is such that they can afford to go down the, for example, 25% replacement route, i.e. expecting a 25% failure rate and still make Money, well just how much do these not so cheap laptops cost to build? -

AskWoody LoungerJuly 9, 2017 at 5:48 am #123943I’ve read a number of articles on this issue. Which does appear to indicate a flaw in some and no problems in others. Is it a production issue? Probably so given that some do not experience issues out of the box and others do. Paul Thurrott indicated a possibly issue with hibernate being triggered due to a firmware flaw in battery or a possible motherboard defect causing issues. In any case why suffer through this issue if you can just return it and hope the replacement has been properly vetted? Of course some people say you may get a refurb that was not vetted properly and end up with another dud.

Posted on July 12, 2017 by Paul Thurrott
Good news for anyone who is suffering from the recently-disclosed hibernation bug in the new Surface Pro: Microsoft says it has identified the problem. And it will soon issue a fix.

GuestDecember 21, 2018 at 11:08 am #241805It happening again GRRR
It is not a hibernation as everything opened (Apps, browsers etc) does not reopen. 4 times in 2 days. Never did this , I attribute it to the latest Windows 10 update 1809 and probably the last few cumulative updates.
Unfortunately mine is out of warranty – Model 1703 Surface Book
