User impact: Users on the new Outlook desktop experience can’t open any attachments and receive an error.

More info: The error message states, “An error occurred while opening the file. Please try again”. Users can still preview the attachments and can also download the attachments to open the file through their program of choice to circumvent this issue. Ha!  Likely because attachments in Outlook (new) are saved in OneDrive and not synced locally.

Behind the Scenes: Storage of Attachments in Exchange Online

        1. Stored Within Your Mailbox on Microsoft’s Servers

Mailbox Database: In Exchange Online, attachments are stored as part of your mailbox, which resides on Microsoft’s secure servers in the cloud.

Emails and Attachments Together: Each email, along with its attachments, is stored as an item within your mailbox database.

Your organization is affected by this event,

Mine isn’t. New Outlook attachments are fine here.

Do you have an Exchange backend? (Outlook / MS  account)

        cheers, Paul

One thing about cloud is that issues are not necessarily the same for all.

Microsoft is also tracking an issue with search problems.
