I am about to go mad trying to get rid of all the templates that populate the New Office Document dialog box (thats the Dialog Box that opens when you click on the New Office Document icon in the start menu). There are so many templates listed from so many different folders (tabs at the top) that they will not all fit. I have changed the Options|File Locations settings to point to a specific folder which has all the templates I use. I have both User Templates and Workgroup Templates locations set. I should only have about 4 tabs at the top, including the General tab. I get 16 tabs, including a “More…” tab that holds the folders that house my templates.

I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of those other templates. I have changes the User and Workgroup Templates settings in Options. I have even searched for folders with the names of the templates listed and cannot find anything. There is an “Other Templates” folder in the Program FilesMicrosoft Office path, but this does not seem to have any correlation with what’s in the Dialog box. It is almost like these template entries are hard-coded. Surely, MS would never do anything like that doh Any help would be appreciated.

      Hi Randall:
Oh, yes. Some of the templates are hard-coded. From Word 2000 on, Microsoft has made it more difficult to get rid of their templates. You have to actually uninstall them (or not install in the first place). I think, but I’m not sure, that Word will recreate them when you run repair. In Word 2000, to get rid of a “tab” in the File/New dialog box, you had to uninstall ALL the templates that were advertised on that tab. For more information, see WD2002: Categories, Locations, and Registry Keys for Word Templates.

I found a better link regarding deleting a default tab. See WD2002: General Questions and Answers About the Location of Word Templates, Item 6.

Despite (or in addition to) the settings in Office for user and workgroup templates, Word will look in: C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeTemplates1033. (This assumes the default location of the Office installation. 1033 is for the US English version of Office. Different languages are different numbers.) To have these not appear, I think you have to not install the templates.

Woody discusses this in “Special Edition Using Office XP” (page 481)
