AskWoody PlusJanuary 30, 2018 at 4:37 pm #163290I admit I am not a cloud type of person and like to be able to work offline, so Office 365 is not my cup of tea (nor is Google docs).
However, from the link of the new features, I am really struck by the iOS and MacOS compatibilities and capabilities. It appears that MS is preparing the reinforcements to keep the $$$ flow if / when Windows 10 adoption rate does not pick up.

As a certified Skywarn spotter, I am a cloud type of person, I guess, but in all of the clouds I’ve looked upon, I’ve yet to see any data hanging out up there. Just water droplets or ice crystals, nothing more!

This is part of what makes me think that Windows 10, such that it is, may represent Microsoft’s exit strategy from the general-purpose OS market, as I have mentioned a bunch of times. Other platforms used to represent The Enemy; each user of non-Windows represented a Windows license that hadn’t been paid for, at a time when Windows revenue represented most of Microsoft’s revenue. Now people talk about the new Microsoft that is no longer aggressive to non-Windows platforms and customers, as if MS is now magnanimous and nice in general.
That’s not it. It’s just that users of non-Windows platforms aren’t enemies any more– they’re potential customers for MS cloud services, where the real money is made. At the same time MS is playing nice with Android, iOS, MacOS, and even Linux users, it’s treating its own Windows users as punching bags. Who’s the enemy now, I have to wonder?

MemberJanuary 31, 2018 at 2:54 am #163384For what it’s worth: Office 2016 for the Mac (not Office 365, but the version of Office for use off line) is not bad at all, in my own experience, and I have been updating it with the monthly patches delivered for it by MS without coming to grief, so far. (Since there is no “AskWoody” equivalent covering MS products for Macs, I just patch and forget…)
So… Is there an Apple in MS future?
Ex-Windows user (Win. 98, XP, 7); since mid-2017 using also macOS. Presently on Monterey 12.15 & sometimes running also Linux (Mint).
MacBook Pro circa mid-2015, 15" display, with 16GB 1600 GHz DDR3 RAM, 1 TB SSD, a Haswell architecture Intel CPU with 4 Cores and 8 Threads model i7-4870HQ @ 2.50GHz.
Intel Iris Pro GPU with Built-in Bus, VRAM 1.5 GB, Display 2880 x 1800 Retina, 24-Bit color.
macOS Monterey; browsers: Waterfox "Current", Vivaldi and (now and then) Chrome; security apps. Intego AV

GuestJanuary 30, 2018 at 5:22 pm #163314Hmm… If you’ve seen the advert MS runs incessantly during PGA golf, maybe all you need to know. Why it’s called Office is beyond me. Spokesperson a Millennial uptalking, emasculated permanent 12-year-old, “wow”, “awesome”, “totally”…, etc. etc., waxing lyrical over worldwide collaboration creating pop-up cards.
Obviously the target audience. And maybe this is the profile of MS patch-testers these days. Might explain a lot…

AskWoody MVPJanuary 30, 2018 at 8:29 pm #163347“Amazing,” surely.
MS wants so badly to be cool! The thing is, it’s just like anything else when it comes to being cool. You can’t look like you’re trying to be cool– that’s uncool. You have to look like you don’t care. Apathy is cool!
I always preferred the lovable “PC” guy from those Mac commercials back in the day, not the smug slacker that Apple thought best represented its own products. Being cool has its limits.

AskWoody_MVPJanuary 31, 2018 at 10:39 am #163456I am suprised Woody didn’t post an article about the new Polaris version of Windows apparently due in 2019.
This is a big deal, to me. Not in itself, but in how it shows Microsoft is completely disconnected internally. On one side, they indirectly admit failure again of Windows S by starting to ship Surface laptops with Windows Pro. On the other side, another team is working on a simple version of Windows that only runs UWP apps. How can they seriously think they have a chance that this thing will work in the market? Are they that naïve at corporate strategy?
Reading this list of features for Office 365 just shows me how Office is not going in a way that I want. Unfortunately, I think Office is even more important to me than Windows, so that is quite depressing.
