I’m renting a laptop because they want $500 to fix my regular.

Did a complete backup/verify of the “old” one, but then it wouldn’t boot, so…

It’s got Windows 11 24h2 on it, so not too bad…

Somehow I have two users with the same user name, but only one works.

What’s missing is the right-click on computer, Manage/Users.

Where/how do I delete the bogus user?  It won’t log in, only the one the is right, so I would just as soon get rid of it.

    Then, off to auto-login!

Since it’s a rental, you might not have all of the privileges you’d normally have. The owner(s) have the right to do that so they keep it in fairly stable shape for repeated rentals.
In other words, you might not be allowed to have all of the normal admin privileges you’re used to having at your disposal on a laptop/desktop that you actually own.

As an alternative, you could try digging around in the settings categories such as Settings>Accounts to see if there is a list of users that is available for you to edit.

I’ll poke around and see what I can find.

      Home or Pro?

Winver doesn’t tell me, and it doesn’t want to run gpedit, so it probably is not Pro. Good grief that may well be the source of many of the issues I am seeing!

        Winver doesn’t tell me,…

Ah, but it does if you look in the right spot!

Look at the beginning of the paragraph below the description of the version number and below the “copyright” line (the one that says “©Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.”).
That paragraph starts with the words “The Windows 11 (Pro or Home) Operating System and its user interface…”. It will either say Pro or Home after the words Windows 11. That’s the giveaway of what version it is. The other way is to open up System Information (if it will let you) and the first line in the box on the right side of that window is the OS’s name, which will include the word Pro or Home.

The final way that comes to mind is to try right clicking the “This PC” icon (if it exists on that machine) and select “Properties” on that menu that comes up. This will definitely tell you not only whether the machine is running Windows 11 Home or Pro but also the numeric version number of the Windows 11 installation, also called the OS Build number.

How about Settings -> System -> About.
