Windows user since windows 3.0 has just acquired first iMac. To date I have had one successful OS update, and managed to get my network attached HP Office Jet 8740 printer/scanner functional. I then went on vacation and have not touched the iMac since.

My next step will be an anti-virus/ internet security product. Any suggestions? I would prefer a product that I can run on multiple platforms.

I have two PCs running Windows 7 using Avast Premium Security, the paid version.  It has been a good product, but recently have been getting a lot of pop ups to buy their other products, which can be a real pain. Also, ever since January 2020, when it was revealed the the Avast Free Product was collecting data on the use of the PC it was installed on, which Avast is then selling to third parties, I’m not sure I trust the product.  See: https://www.pcmag.com/news/the-cost-of-avasts-free-antivirus-companies-can-spy-on-your-clicks

I have a Windows 10 laptop which runs the Windows security product.

I have been using TrendMicro on my Macs since Mountain Lion, currently on Catalina. I also run the security suite on Windows. I have had no conflicts or problems on either platform. I have 5 Macs (MacMini, iMac, 13″ MacBook Pro with Ivy Bridge, 15″ Haswell MacBook Pro, and a Kaby Lake iMac4K). All are running Parallels VMs (Win7/8.1, Win10 1909 & 2004, and an Insider Dev Channel). Price wise, Friday after Thanksgiving, I get a 10-seat 2-year license of TM Max Security for about US$90 (you have to shop around for a deal like that).

I also run Malwarebytes Free on them, but TM doesn’t like Mbam. So I have to uninstall Mbam whenever I install a new license of TM, then reinstall it. Other than that, there is no conflict between the two between times.

I have been using the Webroot anti virus, currently the one called “SecureAnywhere” both in my Mac and my (still and forever) Win 7 PC. No problems, so far. Same as PK, I run Malwarebytes free version in both machines as backup. I may try “TrendMicro”, based on her opinion of it.

I’ve been using Webroot but am having MAJOR issues with Webroot and Catalina, so I’ll have to drop it.

I’m about to trial Intego VirusBarrier (used to use it on Macs for years and only switched to Webroot when I was using a Windows PC and brought the license to my Mac). I’ll keep the community posted on how it goes.

Check out my Mac switcher guide for Windows users on here (PKCano probably has the link). It’ll be a huge help for you.

Quite so. That is why I am still in “Mojave” and skipping “Catalina” while waiting for “Big Sur” to come along and see what happens then with “Webroot.” After so many years of good service and, in my own case, with a good part of a year left and already paid for, I prefer to do that rather than to move on to another AV right away.

Indeed, and in the meantime, I’ll do some testing so if all else fails, at least you’ll know some good options!
