On a new build, what program should be installed first?

The Motherboard drivers or the OS?

I was under the impression that the MB drivers were the first and then the OS.

Is this “New Build” a new machine that has NEVER had any OS installed?

The last new build I did, it has been several years now (Windows 98) after completing the build, I stuck the windows disk in and let it rip. Worked well. I did not load any motherboard drivers seperately. Hope this helps.

I don’t see how you can install anything without an OS!

On the last build I did, I used an Intel mobo which came with a mobo drivers CD. I installed it first, then the OS.

If your mobo doesn’t come with a CD, then I would put in the Windows install disk and let her rip.

PaulB is quite right – if there’s no OS installed, there’s nothing to install drivers into –

so it’s OS first, them motherboard drivers – then any other drivers such as non-on-board graphics. Then security software (AV & Firewall) – then onto the web for OS updates.

And quiet often Windows will install the appropriate drivers for you. And these have generally been tested to work with the version of windows you are installing.

The only exception to the OS first rule is when you need to load RAID or SATA drivers so that the Windows installer can access the HDD, F6 and insert the floppy disk; thankfully becoming rarer now but was very common with the early SATA ‘boards and older Windows.
