I am a school “laptop technician” and we are just looking at next year’s models. We are obliged to get a particular brand – Toshiba – and have been told that the models on offer come with XPHome. We have been advised that our supplier’s technicians have been unable to get networking working with XPHome.
My question is, are the techs correct, or do they need to try harder? The school uses a Netware network, Netware Client32 with Lucent wireless network cards (Cabletron ‘Roamabout’ actually). To downgrade to Win98se will cost us about $US 90 per machine, and we would like to avoid that if possible. Any advice?

well, i know home doesn’t offer a way to log on to NT networks. not sure how that works for netware though…

do they offer upgrading to xp pro for a reasonable cost?

Home supports peer 2 peer only, while Pro supports Peer 2 peer and Domain style networking.

i’ve only seen what MS has – the two major differences is in networking and file sharing/permissions. Pro is like NT , Home is not as full featured, only directories can use permisisons, not files.

New visual design makes it easier to do common tasks efficiently.
Digital photo features let you acquire, organize, and share pictures.

[/indent] Yes, it supports “Peer To Peer” networking only, NO “Domain Server types”. Some VPN is possible but there are some of limits.

      Added url code

Novell have a beta client32 for XP here :

      http://beta.novell.com/public.jsp

Works good on the eval version of XP Pro

Anyway my original problem has gone away, as Toshiba will now ship Win98se with the education models (1800 and 4000) next year – in Oz anyway.
