I have an Ethernet network (Windows calls it a Home network) in my house. Two computers, two printers, one scanner, and relay boxes for a Sonos system are hooked to the network.

My two computers (desktop and laptop) both ran Windows 7 when this was set up 7 or 8 years ago. Everything worked flawlessly. I frequently use my desktop computer to access files on my laptop by accessing them via the Network using Windows Explorer, and vice versa.

A few days ago I upgraded my laptop to Windows 10. I can still access files on my desktop from my laptop, but I can no longer access the files on my laptop from my desktop. In fact, unless I boot the two computers in a certain order, I don’t even see the Win 10 laptop listed under the Network category when viewed from my Win 7 desktop.

When I do get it to appear under the Network category, it has a strange name. I click on that name and I get a Network error, as shown on the attachment. Running Diagnose does nothing. (I found several posts in this forum that addressed the same error message, but they were for different problems.)

I can still print and scan from both my desktop and my laptop. The Sonos systems works fine.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this issue, and how I should solve it?

(I don’t have available at the moment a Win10 computer (Wife’s laptop) to look at to see what terminology or location has changed. Below is Win 7 tower. We intranet just fine.)

It’s not clear if any of these might be a problem:
      A – ThinkpadE430 <=== Thinkpad E430 ?
      B – Laptop/10 has same Workgroup name as on Desktop/7 ? (Requires a reboot.)
C – In [ Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings ] {aka your Home network}, check that these three are ON
      — Network discovery
      — File and printer sharing
      — Public folder sharing
      — Password protected sharing is OFF
      D – In the [ Local Area Connection ] {Adapter} > Properties:
      — “File and Printer Sharing … ” is checked

      PaulK:

      Thanks for the quick response.

      A) The name, as shown on the About page for my laptop, is ThinkpadE430. Did you see something that might make you think it may have had a space in the name?

      B) Yes. Both workgroups are named WARD. I didn’t understand the ?Reboot question.

C) There are two different sharing options: ‘Home or Work’ or ‘Public’. Which are you referring to? Or do you mean both?

      D) On my desktop, it is checked. It also appears to be checked (the layout is somewhat different) on my ThinkpadE430  (now running Win10).

        A. I wasn’t sure if there was a space before the ‘E’. (Fonts aren’t crystal clear.)
        Thinker
        B. When the Workgroup is changed one must do a Restart to make it effective.
        C. Whichever Profile you have active. Home makes sense.
Line one of your post has “(Windows calls it a Home network)”.
        Paul_T’s post below is good.
        D. OK

      Go to Settings and Internet.
Is the network listed as a private network?
If it’s not private, follow the instructions here.

      cheers, Paul

        Paul:

First of all , the problem went away 2 days ago, and has not reoccurred.

On my Windows 7 desktop (actually a tower), my ethernet network is just listed as ‘Home’. On the laptop that I updated from Win 7 to Win 10, and on my new Win 10, it is listed as Private.

So I guess we won’t know exactly what happened.

I am going to ask a different question. And if you think I should start a new post for it, let me know.

As noted above, I don’t use a password because I am the only user of my three computers: a Win 7 desktop, a laptop updated from Win 7 to Win 10, and a new Win 10 laptop. I frequently use Explorer on my desktop to access files on my updated laptop and new laptop, and vice versa.

From my new Win 10 laptop, I can access the files and folders on my updated laptop just fine. But if I try to access files on my new laptop from my updated laptop, it asks for a password. I tried leaving it blank. but it says my new laptop is not accessible, and I may not have permission to use it.

What do I need to do to assure that each of my computers are accessible from the other two, without having a password?

Try turning off password protected sharing on the new laptop – Network and Sharing Center.

            PKCano:

On my new Win 10 laptop, Under All Networks, Password Protection Sharing, I turned it OFF (was ON). It was already OFF on my laptop that I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 and my Win 7 desktop.

Other settings seem to vary between computers.

For my new Win 10 laptop, under Guest or Public, I have both  Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing turned OFF. Is that correct? The laptop I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 have both ON. My Win 7 desktop has Network Discovery OFF and File and Printer sharing ON.

For my new Win 10 laptop, under All Networks, I have Public Folder Sharing turned OFF. Is that correct? The laptop I upgraded from Win 7 to Win 10 and my Win 7 desktop have this ON.

              Public folder sharing OFF.
Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing ON on a Private Network.
Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing OFF on a Public Network.
Both should be on the same Private Network.

      Try :
Set SMB 1 on Windows 10 PC.
Set fixed IP for your Windows 7. Add the Windows 7 PC to Quick Access on Windows 10
