Ref: My hardware question started with post 747,231 which has turned into network problems instead.

StuartA has given this added information: Check what channels each laptop, and the Network Access Point, have been configured to use. These devices will roam to adjacent channels, but they are prone to interference from other people’s equipment using the same channel.

Now I am going to sound very lost here – I finally found where the channel is listed in the Belkin 802.11g Wireless Card Configuration Utility and it is set on 6. I won’t try changing it now but I assume she can highlight the number here and change it to whatever the Access Point is set to? The Access Point is also a Belkin so there must be a way to get into its configuration…. oh, yes I bet that’s the page that is accessed through the browser! I hope she remembers the password to it…..

This gives us another place to have a look see. thankyou I’ll post back after she gets the chance to try connecting again. I’ll be glad when this is solved! yep

I want to add that in my zeal to update my daughter’s laptop, I allowed XP SP3 to download and install. It took for ever and the results were a disaster for the PCMCIA card. It would not connect to my wireless network even though it had worked all day – until then! Thank goodness for System Restore! Whew. I won’t do that again. Now I am back to square one at least. It connects to my wireless network but I won’t know if it works for her until she takes it home again and tries some of the suggestions given here and in my other thread in the Hardware forum.

      Thanks for listening…..

I know I am rambling but since I started this I figure I may as well continue filling in anyone who is interested. My daughter tried to connect last night, and at first her computer couldn’t locate any wireless connections. Then it showed two [if I have her story right] so she picked one and tried to access it with various passwords she remembered. Then she chose not to enter a password at all, and bingo, she got on line. Somehow, I don’t feel good about this at all because I think she may have connected through someone else’s unsecured network. I asked her if any other choices appeared in the Belkin connection panel and she said no. In fact even the one she chose does not show up….. sigh If she disconnects from this one’ which I am uncertain about, will the choices pop up again for her to make another try at “getting it right”? confused

“View all available wireless networks” should show any networks that she could connect to, even if she is already connected to one.

Thanks for your reply! That’s what I thought as well, but she says there is none showing – not even the one she is currently connected to. If I remember the screen correctly, I believe the box at the top was checked to “allow Windows to manage my network connections”…. Could this be the source of the problem? Does this box need to be unchecked?

I always set “Allow Windows to manage my network connections”, and then use the Windows network management tools. The alternative is to use whatever is provided by the vendor of the Network Card.

Thanks Stuart – Then I’ll leave this check box alone.
I haven’t been over to check out her situation since she took her laptop home so I don’t know any more details at the moment. smile

              Thanks for all the help!
