This may be a fools-errand, since a search of the Lounge reveals NO ONE using Netscape 7, but I was just wondering what the scuttlebutt is these days? I have no plans for abandoning Mozilla, but I’m thinking about my work situation where we still have a bunch of people using Netscape 4.something. I think it’s time to “migrate” them to something else but I wouldn’t want to go from bad to worse! Everyone DOES already use IE as well, but we stay completely away from all email clients except Eudora or Netscape. I HAVE taken a look through Google-news and see all the usual tripe but NOTHING like the uproar over Version 6.something! I’m hoping that’s a good sign. Anybody (even non-users) hearing anything significant by way of show-stoppers?

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 22, 2003 at 4:06 pm #647004This search with Google for “netscape 7 review” offers around 615,000 results. Some of them even seem quite complimentary – but I didn’t read them all

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 23, 2003 at 10:33 am #647264The reviews that Leif pointed me to above help, Phil.
…Beyond features, the performance issues that plagued previous Netscape browsers have been solved. While my thoroughly subjective impression is that Internet Explorer is still faster, I’ll leave it up to the lab guys to settle that argument for good. But whichever browser is speediest, at least performance is no longer a problem in Netscape 7.
Like Leif, I only read a few of the reviews, the above quote from ZDNET.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 26, 2003 at 5:04 pm #648013Big Al, I have been using Netscape 7.0 and and upgraded it to 7.01 a few weeks ago and love it. No problems. I use the email client–rarely use Outlook Express and only use IE when I have to ftp to the web site I maintain. Had one glitch when I switched to Verizon DSL. had a corrupt progfile. Created a new one and moved my mail folders to it and everything was fine. I use win98 SE, Norton anti-virus on my PC and Win ME (ugh) on my laptop.

AskWoody LoungerJanuary 26, 2003 at 7:54 pm #648062Thanks for the good report, “Teach!” In addition to your comments and the links with reviews, I’ve had a number of locals tell me they like it pretty well. So, I’ve talked to my supervisor at work and will start using 7.01 on new or re-installs in place of 4.x we’ve been using. For me personally, I still prefer Mozilla!

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 14, 2003 at 5:02 am #653519Al, I’m throwing in my two bits. I’ve used Netscape pretty much exclusively since 4.n. Yes, Version 6 was a disaster. The version 7.01 I use has lots of features not found in IE. There may be some hang-ups or broken pages when IE exclusive things run (microsoft.com has a polite message saying my browser is not welcome there), but I don’t seem to miss much.
I also use the email system. The only drag is Netscape will not import email from Netscape (!) I had to dig around to find the files when I moved to a new HD. In this case I HAVE imported to Outlook Express, then imported to Netscape 7.
Bottom line, for me: I don’t expect to be using IE any tiem soon for routine ingernet browsing.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 15, 2003 at 9:53 pm #653953Hi Errol:
I’m still using version 4.75, but mostly out of laziness. Can you mention some of the important features that version 7.01 has that IE doesn’t have? And do you mean that if I upgrade, I’ll have to import my mail first to OE & THEN to Netscape 7?Al, if you try Netscape 7, I’d like to know how that compares to Mozilla.
Thanks in advance.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 15, 2003 at 11:31 pm #653960Phil,
It’s not a question of “It ain’t broke”. NS 7 is a whole ‘nother animal. That’s why there is no Netscape 5.x – they went ahead to NS 6. I admit NS 7.0x is a big program. But you get a tray Icon to quick start of any part of NS (browser, mail, etc.).You can open multiple web pages on Tabs, all in one window, as opposed to multiples windows of IE. Then, if it’s a tab collection you like (Say, all your stock reports or weather in six cities, etc.) you can bookmark the whole set at once.
There is a Sidebar feature that has handy tabs, like Search, maps, news, that you can customize, depending on what the tab is for.
I prefer NS 7’s Password Manager over IE’s. You have a bit more control of how it works. Cookie Manager, too.
I just checked the NS’s “Browser Central“, and found out there’s a one-click search function, for any word on a web page.
As for upgrading, NS 7 has an Import utility that will accept mail, addresses, and settings from Communicator 4.x, Eudora, Outlook Exp and Outlook. I had the problem that I was physically moving from one disk to a pristine installation of Win XP, and I could not import NS 7 to NS 7.
Obviously, nothing steers you to use Microsoft’s features or facilities. (Grain of salt: Netscape is owned by AOL now. You’ll see AOL stuff, but it’s not as subtle as Microsoft can be.
)
As for Mozilla, I know NS is based on Moz, but I thinnk you’ll understand my laziness to investigate THAT!
