Netmeeting isn’t a dud. It works quite well.
I have used it several times. A few times to have a code review via the internet. We had folks from the US east cost, Canada, the UK and Russia all “talking” and looking at the same code, all at the same time. I have also used it to help one of my friends sort out some display problems he was having.
What exactly are you trying to do with it?

AskWoody LoungerMarch 16, 2003 at 12:32 am #661433Hi Bryan, mostly I am flying in the dark with netmeeting. I used to have a much older version on my home machine over 3 years ago and after fumbling my way around using it I actually found it pretty amazing considering it is a free program. Once I got past the incredible amount of users in the directory and created a private “room” to communicate with a couple of specific people only, it was very cool. Could use the whiteboard, microphone and text without problems (slow audio but still amazing at the time). Since then I have changed machines to a notebook, and not needed to use it until lnow. However I cannot get it to “talk” on this machine, the program is loaded, comes up when I launch, a small screen appears (very different from early versions), I filled out everything needed, but it will not connect to the directory server. The only directory option for connection is to the Microsoft directory, that screen comes up, then after a while of trying it comes back saying “unable to connect to directory”, I have tried everything I know but nothing can get it working. It would be wonderful if you can give me an idea of what you think I am doing wrong (please). General comments I have heard back when I ask colleagues about netmeeting, all say to give up on it. I am happy to have found a supporter of this product, anything at all you can advise please do so. I would still like to have another shot at getting it going. Many thanks for your reply Bryan.

Sorry for the delayed response. I’ve been up to my … in aligators!!
The Internet Directory in Netmeeting has been “replaced” by the MSN Messenger service. I will attach a screen shot that shows what MS displays for me.
You can start a NetMeeting session with someone in your contact list in MSM. Or if you know the IP address of the person that you want to have a NetMeeting session, you can just enter it into the To box of the Place a Call dialog.
Does that help?

AskWoody LoungerApril 25, 2003 at 6:04 pm #671346Brian,
I recently upgraded my workstation from NT40 to W2K Pro. Now my NetMeeting works fine except … “Activate Desktop Sharing” remains greyed out. So no one can NetMeet over to me, even thought I can still access everyone else. I’ve tried conf.exe to re-setup, which it did, but still same condition. How can I get ADS to become available again? Thanks if you know,

Here are some links to add to Bryan’s info; Microsoft is promoting of course, MSN Messenger 8, but Netmeeting, the built in netcam, is alive and well in XP.You can bring up Netmeeting in XP by typing “conf” (no quotes) in the run box, and Netmeeting’s wizard will pop up. If you aren’t using XP, then you can download it from the second link below
