Netgear CG3000D Unable to Manually Set DNS Servers

Hello all, I actually have a multi-part question regarding Charter Communication’s Netgear CG3000D Modem/Router. I have been noticing that I’ve been getting some latencies that I would consider as “high” when pinging sites like Google and Yahoo, usually around 30 – 47ms to Google and a 98ms avg to Yahoo.com. I was even getting an 11ms ping to my router. So I updated the NIC driver just to make sure that that was not the culprit and the router ping, while still not great (1-2ms I would imagine) came down considerably. So I ran DNS Benchmark Utility and when I went to change the DNS settings in the router/modem it looks as if Charter has flashed the firmware for the router to something of their own creation, thereby preventing me from changing the DNS settings in the router. As I just sent my old Linksys over to my nephew serving out of country in the Army I’m kind of stuck right now. The parts to my question are:

a) If I set the DNS settings in the TCP/IP properties of the NIC, will they override the router’s DNS settings (pointing to Charter’s DNS Servers of course)?

b) Assuming that my first inclination is right and that it will not override the router’s settings, is it possible to flash the firmware of the router to either Netgear’s firmware for that router or some other firmware without bricking the router or incurring the wrath of Charter?

c) IF it is possible to flash the firmware can anyone link to the latest version from Netgear or a decent…not sure what the correct term is…”aftermarket”? version? My Google-Fu has turned up nothing positive thus far and it is getting very disconcerting. The Hardware version is 2.01 and the Software Version is V5.5.4.mp2_RG18. I know that I should’ve just bought a standalone DOCSIS 3.0 router but finances at the time….well…and now…preclude me from doing so, so I’m stuck with it for the time being.

a) The DNS settings in the TCP/IP properties of the NIC should overide the router settings.
b) If Charter supplied the router/modem, you could be liable for the retail cost of the unit if you change the firmware without thier permission. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Thanks for the info. Somewhere in the back of my mind I suspected that your answer was the right one but I kept thinking that the router/gateway settings overrode the NIC. I couldn’t find anywhere on the net to test what my DNS settings were even though IPCONFIG/ALL shows the ones I manually set in the NIC. As for flashing the firmware again I”m certain you are right, especially w/ my luck. And I’m also sure that that $50.00 router/modem would suddenly cost a couple thousand bucks if I bricked it…
