Latest Master Patch List has two .net updates: 5033918 (3.5 and 4.7.2) and 5033909 (3.5 and 4.8). I was offered a third option 5034275 (3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1) which I hid. I have 4.8.0.4084 installed, which I assume falls under 4.8. Should I defer installation of this version and why not listed on Master Patch List?

    Thanks,

    D. Eager

Windows update will offer the correct .net appropriate to your system.
There is no need to hide .net.

Please check Master Parch List which has January .NET updates on “defer” status. However, the one I received is not listed there, hence my question.

KR5034275 is a .NET Rollup for 3.5/4.8/4.8.1 that contains the individual updates for:
      KB5033909 for .NET 3.5/4.8 and KB5033918 for .Net 3.5/4.8.1

Windows Update offers the Rollup for all versions (3.5/4.8/4.8.1)
Depending on which combination is installed on your computer, you will either get
      KB5033909 for .NET 3.5/4.8
      OR
      KB5033918 for .Net 3.5/4.8.1

Understood. This confusing setup has occurred before I believe. So, when Susan gives to “OK” for 5033909 I should unhide and install 5034275. Is this correct? I seem to recall that on previous Master Patch Lists Susan clarified this confusion caused by Microsoft’s numbering.

        Thanks!

      If it helps: I’m W10 22H2 – 4.8.09037 (up from your 4084 on Oct ’23) and WuMgr instd KB5034275 . MS page for 5034275 shows 4.8 / 4.8.1 – 22H2 Only.

I’ve never delayed Net Frmwk updates or had an issue – ever. What you hid is likely your correct choice but Susan’s OK is another matter.

Don’t hide it, it means I screwed up the listings. I always have a heck of a time tracking down the .NETs because they have a parent KB and then the ultimate KB. You get offered the parent, but then the system decides what you need and supplies just that.

I’ll go back and confirm it on the spreadsheet and update- but that’s the KB’s you should see.

I hid it as I assumed that since the “children” of the parent KB were marked as “Defer” in the Master Patch List I should. Is this not correct? If I didn’t hide it, the “child” would presumably come though to the Update queue. Should I just leave it there until you advise it’s safe to install or what? Don’t understand why Microsoft just doesn’t issue separate KBs from the get go instead of using a “parent.”

        Thanks,

Right now I’m in defer/pause mode for the .net updates.  I only recommend hiding when I strongly feel that it’s not needed.

Your last response has make me wonder if I’ve been mishandling updates for years, possibly creating more work for myself. Up till now, everytime I access your Master Patch List after a patch Tuesday, I’ve been using wushhide to hide anything that applies to my PC that you initially classify as “defer” or “avoid.” Once you update the classification to “Install” I unhide the hidden items that changed and let them flow through to the Windows Update queue, after which I download and install them.

If this is incorrect, please give me additional guidance on the proper procedure.

Thanks so much for all you do!
