    Hi all,

I got the January Patch Tuesday (thereabouts) updates after DEFCON was lowered.  There was a .NET update included.

Today, I got an alert saying that KB5050593, described HERE, is available and recommended.

What do any of you think about this update?  Is it necessary for my security?  I did a full backup earlier today in case it made things go sideways, but I don’t want to download it until I hear from some of you good people.  I don’t understand why it was released on its own just a couple of weeks after the Patch Tuesday updates, unless it’s critical, but it says no new security improvements.  Should I wait until February’s updates to install?

    Many thanks,

    SBS

KB5050593 is a .NET Preview update. Previews are usually released late in the month and are primarily for testing purposes by enterprise. They generally do not contain Security fixes.

AskWoody does not recommend installing Preview patches.

        @PKCano

Thanks much.  I didn’t know about these preview test updates, after all these years.  It pays to ask!

The Microsoft support article for KB 5050593 says this:

“There are no new security improvements in this release. This update is cumulative and contains all previously released security improvements.”

So from a security point of view you’re fine since you installed the Janusry .NET patch.

FWIW I inadvertently installed the 5050593 a couple days ago and all is well. I can’t recall ever having any problems with .NET patches or previews; they seem to be far better behaved than, for example, the Windows 10 patch Tuesday security updates.

Good to know that if I should inadvertently download it, it probably won’t hurt anything.  Thanks much.

I generally avoid previews although, .NET previews are relatively benign and harmless that may offer functionality improvements. Nothing to fret about TBH

TYVM.  I never paid enough attention to updates to realize that some are previews/tests.  I’ll hold off, but good to know that it probably wouldn’t hurt anything.  Thanks!

Have you considered using a WU controller like wumgr instead of the proprietory OS Windows Update.

Having more control over updates that gives a second chance to review.
You can also block ‘previews’ in GP if you do not want them at all.
(look for WUfb sub-section within Windows Updates..)
