Hi loungers….I did a clean, complete install of Win7 on a SONY computer that has a built-in Motion Eye camera….I cannot get the camera to work and Sony won’t support it with new drivers….can someone recommend some webcam software that I can download for free that will restore function to the camera? Thank you

AskWoody PlusFebruary 16, 2010 at 10:49 pm #1209565It is a SONY computer……that came with VISTA…..and so I have done a clean, new install of Win7…….and Sony is giving me no help in terms of finding some software that will enable the built-in Motion Eye camera to work…..so, I need to find some 3rd party software that will ‘run’ the built-in camera…….any ideas? AskWoody LoungerFebruary 17, 2010 at 4:14 am #1209585The question was “What is the model number” of the PC. Did you check Sony eSupport here? Many manufacturers are not providing Win 7 drivers for older models. In device manager what is the manufacturer of the camera? Perhaps their web site will have updated drivers.

Sometimes Vista drivers will work in Windows 7.

Got to http://esupport.sony.com/ – there you will see a section on the right called “Go directly to your Model Home”. In the box provided, enter the full model number of your computer and press “Continue”. From the page then displayed, you may see the following depending on your computer model:
Windows® 7 Upgrade Information
Windows® 7 Upgrade Package – Check Your Order StatusSee All File Downloads Available for Your Model
The Windows 7 Upgrade Information link provides a means of ordering a Win7 upgrade companion disk if your computer model and purchase date is eligible. The disk will come with all the Sony software that was installed on your computer from the factory upgraded for Win7. (you need to know the purchase date of your computer) This would include software supporting your webcam. That is the process I used myself for a Sony VGN-NS290J model laptop.
Alternatively, you can click on See All File Downloads Available for Your Model and select just the software and/or drivers that you want.

AskWoody PlusFebruary 20, 2010 at 11:17 am #1210342Hi Terry….thank you for that suggestion….as it turns out, this particular computer (apparently) isn’t upgradeable to WIN 7…so, I used a store bought copy of Win 7 Ultimate and did a clean install….I lost all the proprietary SONY software, but was able to pull together some very good freeware (AVG, CCleaner, Defraggler, OpenOffice.org, etc) and then I just attached my Logitech USB camera and d/loaded WIN7 software for that camera….so, basically, I am up and going…missing MS Office but I have that software and just have to decide whether I want to go with Office 2007 (or install MS Works and upgrade to Office 2003)…….do you know if it is possible to install Office 2007 and also Office 2003…and if so, is there a cheap/free ‘downgrade’ from 2007 to 2003……b/c everything I have and do is in 2003 (corporate environment) and likely will be for the foreseeable future….

Hi dmcnab, I’m afraid I can’t help with your question about MS Office. I only use OpenOffice.
Getting back to your comment about losing your Sony Software, did you actually go to the Sony support site and try checking for your model? I also purchased a retail copy of Win7 and did a clean install, but through the Sony support site I was able to order the Win7 upgrade companion disk which installs the Sony software that supports the computer as purchased.
Regards.

You can have both Office 2003 & Office 2007 installed. However, in any of the Office 2007 applications you can save in the Office 2003 format. So, you don’t have to worry about having both versions.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 24, 2010 at 10:17 am #1210810Microsoft do recommend that you use Office 2007 with Windows 7, and if you are using 64bit, there are some elements of 2007 that have 64bit capability. Office 2003 went end of life for mainstream use in April 2009, and apart from the odd security patch and Outlook Junk Email update, no further support is offered other than paid for support (Extended). The official line from MS is the Extended Support will last till Jan 2014, but given Office 2010 is out in June, by 2014, there will likely be another Office package (2013?)
not a big fan of upgrading if I don’t have to, but I find Office 2007 and Windows 7 64bit work very well in our LAN for now. even my 4.5 year old T43 ThinkPad has a new lease of life by removing XP and loading Win 7 32bit, Lenovo have kindly release an updated System Update package to allow downloading off Win7 add-ins.

AskWoody LoungerFebruary 27, 2010 at 1:24 pm #1211350My experience with Sony has been bad. I have two relatively new Sony VAIO notebooks which came with Vista Ultimate, and which I upgraded to Win 7. Sony has been NO help. There are no Sony Win 7 drivers for this model. All Sony would say was to try the Vista drivers and they MIGHT work. They did NOT work – in fact installing the Sony Vista DVD driver with Win 7 trashed the Sony DVD drive. (The only fix to that was to reinstall Win 7, which was a challenge with no DVD drive). I finally used a third party program to find manufacturer drivers and installed them.
The built in camera on these computers does not work yet. My next move — when I get some time — is to try to reinstall the Sony utilities that came with the computers. However I am pessimistic about that.
My theory is that Sony is refusing to support relatively new computers with Win 7 so that they can sell new Win 7 computers. I am about done with Sony.
