is there any reliable solid email client for pop3 available
i need to download my email and keep it myself
for speed and convenience as well as to back up

    want a pop3 client for both win8.1 and xpprosp3

    different clients are okay

note that had used eudora 7.1.0.9 until changes
at isp or glitch in pc causes ntdll.dll error so i can receive but not send email

    must be rock solid
and if it is xp then please provide a version number that is known to work

WAY TOO MANY PROGRAMS KEEP UPDATING VERSIONS AND DO *NOT* WORK ON XP ANY LONGER with nasty results when you try to use them anyway even if an earlier version did work

the newest version is worse than a virus when that happens

I’m becoming more partial to Mozilla’s SeaMonkey browser and the E-Mail Client that comes with it. There is also the OE Classic.

Both are free but OE Classic Pro is not expensive.

There are older versions of Mozilla Thunderbird [oldversion.com & oldapps.com to name just two reliable places] that will work just fine within XP.

In XP, Pro, SP3 the default, for over a decade is “Outlook Express 6”. Rock Solid and used by millions.

In 7, 8, 8.1 and Now Windows 10, my choice is “Windows Mail”.
It’s deactivated by default, but can easily be re-activated. PM!

I’m using it today, on Windows 10, Build 10130, and it works like a Champ!

I have used The Bat! for several years and hope to continue to be able to. But, it is a purchase, not a freebie. You can have many email address accounts, set up folders and sub folders, and make templates for messages. Updates come out regularly.

When I was a Windows user, I used Bat for many, many years. I still think it is a great program. However, as stated, it does require purchasing. Now, I’ve been a Linux user for over 5 years, please let me suggest Thunderbird for his POP email client.

I use Thunderbird on WIn 8.1. It works fine.

I still use Eudora with Windows 7 and also with Windows 8.1. The only problem is that from time to time after installing Microsoft updates I get a message that Eudora is not the default mail program. The simple solution is to right click the desktop shortcut and choose run as administrator. Then set the default in the window that comes up. IMHO Eudora is still the best pop mail client.

eM Client should work for you. It is free with a maximum of two email accounts. If you have more accounts than that the pay version should work for you. I have my outlook mail sent tmy Gmail account because of Gmail’s excellent s.p.a.m filtering. I really like eM Client. I use it on all my Windows computers. I use Thunderbird for my Linux machines and it is good as well.

I’ve used Thunderbird for over 10 years, since about when it was first released. I just moved from XP to Windows 8.1 about a month ago and it was running the latest release with no problems – and I’m sure it will continue to do so. I use it for several POP accounts.

When you install Thunderbird it will detect your old email client and ask if you want to import it’s settings, mail, address books, filters and so on. It’s import just makes copies, so the stuff you have on Eudora will stay there.

If you decide to try it, make sure you download it from the official site, https://mozilla.org/thunderbird.

First things first: have you tried fixing the error? Loads of advice and how-tos out there, eg from About.com and the same steps with comments on Seven Forums. If you can fix, you can keep Eudora. Try uninstalling and reinstalling Eudora first.

I assume you’re an advanced email user if you were using Eudora? If so, Thunderbird and similar may not meet your needs, as they’re more like upgraded Outlook Express, ie short on power user features. Plus, it looks to me like Thunderbird is not being developed seriously anymore.

Only Outlook [NB not Outlook Express] met my needs when I switched from Eudora last decade. These days I’m getting irritated by Outlook’s ‘improvements’, and have been looking around for a possible replacement–like you, I want desktop POP rather than IMAP or other ‘cloudies’, and the only two which catch my eye so far are returning to Eudora, or The Bat! Pegasus is also advanced, but the development history makes me a bit nervous.

You might take a look at the reviews on Gizmo’s Freeware…

If Thunderbird is the best freebie, then this is probably a software sector where a serious user needs to pay for quality. I’ve seen too many negatives about TB around the net in the last year or two to even recommend it to casual users.

Thunderbird development is alive and well…

Good to hear, I must have missed it when Mozilla reversed their various moves and announcements which either expressed disappointment in TB, or effectively dumped it. See eg this article from three years ago.

Putting out new releases does not mean there’s any dev going on, it may be only bug fixes and security patches.

The latest version of Thunderbird (v38) is fine on Windows XP.

And why the heck do we need development??
Bug fixes yeah! Good! But ….
Development these days seems to mean breaking whats good, giving jumbled GUI and less useful features, fer instance FF.

Still using TB 8 on XP and quite contented thank you!

      TB8
