Need help extracting portion of DVD and recording it to another DVD

I have a homemade DVD of a wedding from which I want to extract a 5-minute segment (audio & video) and then burn that segment onto another (blank) DVD.
I don’t have anything but an old version of Roxio, but I am willing to download any free (or very inexpensive) video editing software to accomplish this.
The files on my DVD are:
FOLDER E:VIDEO_TS
FILE VIDEO_TS.BUP
FILE VIDEO_TS.IFO
FILE VIDEO_TS.VOB
FILE VTS_01_0.BUP
FILE VTS_01_0.IFO
FILE VTS_01_1.VOB
FILE VTS_01_2.VOB
FILE VTS_01_3.VOB
FILE VTS_01_4.VOB
FILE VTS_01_5.VOB

I can autoplay the DVD (Win Media Player appears to be used), but I don’t have a clue about how to transfer just the part I want to another file or set of files. I know how to copy the entire DVD, but that won’t do what I need.
Any suggestions about what free or cheap software I can use for this?

These websites that simply give a list of every possible software, but without rating them, are almost useless. Much better is Gizmo’s TechSupportAlert.com. They have volunteer editors for dozens of categories, who take the time to test programs and make recommendations. Agree; plus Gizmo was with Windows Secrets for a couple of years.

I always check his site when looking for some niche software–it’s a shame they only do ‘free’ stuff, since free is often more costly than paid-for.

Technically, you may have to convert the DVD’s content [TheWedding video] into a one big fat MP4 or WMV file. Then, with the proper editor, you can cut off the unwanted before and after the desired 5-minute portion. What I used in the past are not free, nor real cheap: WinX [Digiarty] and Cyberlink stuff. Let us know how it all worked out,

I still use DVD Shrink. It’s very old and no longer supported. The final version is v3.2.0.15 which is still available from places like MajorGeeks.com.

The thing I like best about DVD Shrink is its ease-of-use. Once installed:

1. Click on the Open Files button to load the files from the VIDEO_TS folder of your DVD.
2. Click on the Re-author button.
3. Drag the Title you want from the Main Movie column on the right of the screen to the DVD Structure area on the left of the screen.
4. Click on the Set Start/End Frames button to set the start and end points of the segment you want to extract.
5. Click on the Backup! button to backup just your selected segment.

I’ve tried several other freeware and paid-for video editing programs but still keep returning to DVD Shrink for speed and simplicity.

I’ll put in a kind word for Windows MovieMaker which we’ve used over and over again down through the years. It’s free and it has good help files/tutorials to describe each task or feature. The only thing you want to watch out for is be sure to choose the right “Output” type when you’re done trimming the video to the size you want. I think one of the choices is for burning to a DVD so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Recently we’ve been using Serif Software’s MoviePlus X5 (or maybe it’s version 5) because it has a good anti-shake feature that really improves the jiggly movement that occurs when you hold the camera in your hand and move around while recording.
We bought MoviePlus at a closeout/clearance price after the newer version came out. It seems that Amazon.com and Newegg.com will do some really low prices on last year’s version once the newer one is available.

You could also try this – DVD Flick; http://www.dvdflick.net/ . Each .VOB file can be played separately and if what you want is in 1 or 2 of these you can drag them into DVD Flick to burn only them as a DVD. It’s not strictly an editing program but can be extremely useful.
A true free editor is also available from Serif – http://www.serif.com/free-video-editing-software/ and is a very good program.
There’s also a lot of “on line” video editors as well but these use up your internet data.

I dabble with video files pretty often. I have a lot of files on my personal computer, and many more in storage that I’ve pulled from the web and from dvd’s that are in the audio_ts and video_ts format.

I used to use dvdshrink back in the day when everone used XP and ripping DVD’s was the thing. I still use InfraRecorder as a software to make all of the video_ts files back into an iso file. I also still use VLC sometimes, and I still use ImgBurn as my primary DVD & CD burner software. (be careful if you install that one) I use DVD Flick all of the time. It still installs on W7, W8 and W10 – works well. I use 7zip to extract files directly from and iso file – 7zip also pulls apart exe files and many others BTW. I have all of this stuff installed on my computer for regular use.

I have used Daum Potplayer as my primary video player for a few years now. I think it works really well. I convert files from the .VOB format to .Mp4 pretty often. I am currently messing around with Handbrake to convert a video file to .Mp4 and leave out the lines. I keep running into problems like making a huge, huge video file. Making it look right. I use comand line to merge all of the video files like this: “C: copy /b VTS_01_1.VOB + VTS_01_2.VOB + VTS_01_3.VOB + VTS_01_4.VOB + VTS_01_5.VOB FILE.VOB” where FILE.VOB is literally the result of VTS_01_1.VOB + … + VTS_1_5.VOB attached end to end, one after the other.

You can use the copy /b A.ext + B.ext + C.ext File.ext for all kinds of files.

I have not yet gotten to the point where I can edit those video files like OP was asking. Cutting out a little piece of of the video file, just to have for regular use. I used to do that with older versions of NERO, but I have not yet found a current free software solution for that particular proble. I’ll try and post a solution somewhere know when I solve that one!
